New MJ 917 no. does not receive cell phone calls (Verizon)

I was amongst the first to get MJ years ago when it was still in beta, found out about it on a geek forum. I was thrilled with it, got assigned a random number from one of the two states available. Then about a year later, my home state was added and I got a 201-215-XXXX number; I signed on for 5 years. But service was inconsistent and after a couple years, I semi-abandoned ít for a more standard VOIP service (Joiphone). Now I'm looking to cancel Joiphone, but still need a NYC no. for family who live/work in Manhattan, so I inadvertently signed up for a second MJ account (softphone) under a 917-965-XXXX number instead of simply changing my phone no. for the same price ($10). What I thought was cool is that I could easily switch the phone nos. and attach the new number to the MJ box, which is what I did, so I could receive calls to an actual phone. BUT phone calls made to the new 917 no. from my cell phone do not go through; I get a message saying I've reached a non-working number. I am apparently able to make calls from my landline but not from my cell phone, which is a Verizon number. I never had and do not have this problem with my original 201 number. Anyone have any insights? Did I pick a bad prefix or area code?
