NetTalk Duo number porting...

Post by ctbear »

Now, this will surely make things interesting. Nothing like a bit of competition in the market:

According to a mod on the nettalk forum:
Number Porting FAQ
Hi everyone,

Wanted to update everyone on the status of number porting as it is a big buzz on the forums as of late. I can confirm that we are testing the feature internally and things are moving forward. I have personally ported my number from ATT to my DUO and the process did take a bit. Below are some Q & A's I have come up with so far that I have seen around.

Q. When will nettalk officially have number porting?
A. There is no official date as of yet but right now we are hoping to have it out within the next month or two

Q. Will I be able to port my number over if I already have a nettalk number?
A. Yes you will be able to switch your current number to your ported number

Q. Are there any fees with number porting?
A. There will be a one time fee associated with number porting however the pricing is not set yet

Q. How long does porting take?
A. The answer to that depends on your phone number, some take longer than others (some take a couple of days others may take much longer) and some cannot be ported at all. More info will on this will be available before you port over.

Q. Will I have to notify my provider?
A. No, however in some cases it may affect your internet service if it is bundled. In my personal experience ATT had to provide a new DSL account using a new account number different than my old number in order to continue using their ATT DSL service.

This may tip the scale for those who are deciding between nettalk and mj+. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out and how, if, MJ+ responds to this to obtain market competitiveness, which they seem to have thrown out by restructuring their pricing to match that of NetTalk's.

I think Vengy actually works for NetTalk, so it does look like they are real close. But who knows, there are some very unhappy users in that forum who have been waiting and waiting on promised porting since sometime in 2009. Kind of like magicJack deja vu all over again.
