CallCentric
I'm kind of surprised that there is no thread of CallCentric as an alternative in this section. I've seen it mentioned in some threads but not much detail. It is pretty good price as an actual VOIP phone company, see:
http://www.callcentric.com/products/
If I'm understanding this right, it's $5.95 plus taxes, 911 service ($1.50), and a very small fee per call made out per month (probably less than $10) for unlimited calling. I can port my land line for $20. The phone adapter is about $30, depending on which one you choose.
My other options I am considering are either upgrade to the MJP, Nettalk DUO, or OBI100/110 + GV. Nettalk DUO and the GV option do not offer porting my current land line, an option I much prefer.
Any thoughts?

I have a free Inum DID from them. They do seem to be a very good VoIP provider, and they have very reasonable prices compared to the big VoIP companies. You can use the OBi devices with them too as they allow BYOD. I have my Inum account with them on a Grandstream HT502.
And you can port your number to GV if you first port it to a pre-paid phone, I think most people have used T-Mobile for doing this. There is a thread on the OBihai forum on how to do it. Sucks that you have to use a pre-paid mobile as a middle man though, as it will add some minor additional costs to the port.

There may be no thread because there is no drama with the service. I chose them about 12 months ago when my MJ device died. I have actually ported over my home phone (a number we have had for 30 years) . If you have been married as long as I have, you make sure it works flawlessly before making the family use it. It costs $3.45/mo for the DID ( phone number) and 911 service. I chose the $.015/min incoming plan and $.0198/ min outgoing as we don't use the phone very much. I have spent a total of $113.75 for my phone service for the last 12 months including the fee to port my number, there are no taxes orhidden fees. . No drama, no loss of service at all, multple free features including iNum, call blocking, etc. I also spent about $35 for a GrandStream handytone 286 for the device (ATA) that fits between your phone and your router. Very simple to set up. The only caveat that I have for the service is that you must dial 1+ area code for all numbers dialed. I edited all the numbers in our phonebook to dial that way. Try the free service if you already know someone using the service.

One thing I would not do is an upgrade to MJ plus. I am still sticking to MJ classic but my patience is wearing thinner, both because of company constant shenanigans and growing problems with MJ. It is not quite easy to differentiate between problems caused by our miserable ISP and caused by MJ but at least a part of the recent problems I have is MJ related. My other options I am considering are either upgrade to the MJP, Nettalk DUO, or OBI100/110 + GV. The number porting is a problem indeed. Maybe a few months more patience
until Nettalk gets it's act together or possibly the option GV via prepaid cell phone
I heard good things about callcentric but it is simply far more expensive.
Rumors, rumors. The fact that it takes them longer than MJ is not a good sign.I heard number porting from netTALK will be available in November sometime. They are also a Sfl company
MJ is also a South Florida company. Which is off course important because we need some real economy here beyond bulldozing the nature, drug trafficking and screwing each other, but I would rather prefer somebody from Papua-New Guinea who gets his act together.
An important question aboutTelecom choices is how much we want to pay. The rock bottom is sometimes not enough. That's why I often do not use the cheapest option for international calls because I need quality, reliability and customer service.

NetTalk and/or their fans have inherited or caught the MJ "promise" disease. Everytime I look there is a new estimate on their porting.Pablo123 wrote:I heard number porting from netTALK will be available in November sometime.
NetTalk has even taken to issuing press releases with dates for new products that seem to come and go. This one said their new NetTalk TV was expected in Q3 of 2011. Oops. Right out of the MJ playbook.

Nothing? Except of course, that they issue a press release with a date for a new product, and miss the date. And promise that porting is coming "sometime in the future", for almost 2.5 years now and counting. Makes them sound like MagicJack Junior.Pablo123 wrote:netTALK is nothing like Magic Jack.
Granted, 2.5 years is in the future.
Like night and day difference. Anyone who has dealt with both would have to agree with that!Pablo123 wrote:netTALK is nothing like Magic Jack, NT actually treats there customers way better!
NetTalk actually has intelligent tech support folks who don't just read from a script.
If NetTalk Duo is not working then NetTalk provides a new one free of cost and handles shipping for the new device to you and the return of the old device to them.

No one who has only dealt with MJ would claim that they have comparable customer support. It is horrendous.VaHam wrote:Like night and day difference. That's totally different than saying they have NOTHING in common, unless you two have different definitions of nothing! I mentioned two things they have in common, and I'm sure i could find more with a little effort.
