MagicTalk (MJ App) Is Being Discontiued, No More Renewals

Post by bbildman »

Hello, I chatted with an agent today and asked why the Renewal button was no longer on my Subscription Page online...he told me the service is being discontinued, and there are no more renewals. Only the MJ Dongle and MJ Plus are being sold.

Bummer, because I really like the MT service...guess I'll have to revert to finding a way to boot the MJ interface without using the dongle, as I use a headset.

I live in Spain for the moment, and the MJ service has been great, no charges at all for calling any number in the US, not anyone calling me.

Unfortunately I just found this out myself. Even though MJ didn't have a phone number in my area code I was using MagicTalk to make outgoing calls and was going to buy a MagicJack when they finally get my area code in their system. I guess I will be using another service now as they still haven't corrected their area code page yet. My area code is still listed even though they don't have phone numbers still. Even though the product seems to work as described the customer support system is so flaky that I have really been scared to buy one. Even my local Radio Shack says that the company is flaky. They have to contact customer service using the chat feature just like they were a regular customer. Because of this I don't recommend MagicJack to anyone as there are better similar services out there.

For what it's worth, I had a Boost Mobile phone laying around and purchased a $5.00 activation kit, during setup I picked a local area code and phone number and then ported that number to MJ. It cost around $25.00 to do that, but figured I was saving the monthly cost of a landline. This might help others.

HEEEY! WHY???!?!

Post by macrat »

I really like using the standalone. I have a big problem. My netbook hard drive got zapped, and when I reinstalled the software, it's now asking for the dongle! I want to continue using the app. with the account I paid for it! Two years I paid for in 2010. Why are they chomping on MagicTalk users now?

I though you could run the latest software versions without the dongle.
Are you saying that doesn't work now?

Maybe use the dongle for initial setup then run software only?

If you never had the dongle, then they should reactivate the software, send you a free dongle (if the software only route woke after activation), or refund the unused amount.

(Severely edited for a huge correction)

I thought the MagicTalk App beta accessed was set by a registry key.

It's not. It's set by the hardcoded MAC address of your CPU's motherboard. Can't transfer it that easily.
