Static IP Assignment
Got my new MJ+, registration went smoothly but I've been trying to assign a Static IP for the past few nites, but no dice. I just did a chat with them and they said that MJ+ will only work via DHCP right now and that they're working on getting the static IP feature to work. Has anyone else gotten this response or do you think it's a BS way of getting people off their backs for now and hoping they'll forget it altogether??
For now, I've just turned off DHCP, let the MJ+ grab an IP, reserved that IP and then turned DHCP off again. The MJ+ will hold that IP until it is unplugged or loses power.

I'm trying to assign it using my.magicjack.com\My Subscriptions.firefoxsilver9 wrote:how are you trying to assign a Static IP? I have my MJ+ assigned to a Static IP via my router's firmware settings. I also got it setup to use the MAC address to give it highest priority via QoS.
The Static IP is assigned in my internal network, not a public IP address.
I have a Belkin F5D8235 and don't see a way to directly assign addresses in there. You either have DHCP on or off and the manual assignments is done at the client level. The indirect way I've assigned an address of my liking is what I detailed in my original post. If you know how I can get this done the true way, please let me know. Since I don't plan on moving my MJ+ around nor do I lose power frequently, it's not that big of a deal, but I really don't like doing things the indirect way, if you know what I mean.

What IP configuration is the Magicjack Static IP asking for? The ISP's public IP Address or a LAN IP?

I asks for IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway IP, Broadcast IP, DNS Server 1 and DNS Server 2, so I'm assuming it's internal LAN info and not public side. But, guess I could be wrong though. But if it's asking for public info, how would it ever know what internal static IP I'm trying to give to it?firefoxsilver9 wrote: first time i'm hearing about that option from Magicjack.com

Do you have a professional grade router?

Not sure if you've checked the Belkin manual, but page 37 shows you how to use Static IP Reservations while DHCP is enabled on your router. You can setup the MJ+ to use a internal static ip and your other devices can connect via the DHCP.

Has that method been unsuccessful?

Yep, that's the "indirect" method that I have already used. That gets things working and assigns the IP that I want, but the problem w/ this method is that anytime the MJ+ is unplugged or power goes out, it will then lose the IP b/c my DHCP is turned off. I manually assign addresses to everything on my home network and really prefer to keep DHCP turned off. Not that it's a huge deal, but it is a slight PIA having to log into the router, turn DHCP on to let the MJ+ grab an IP and then turn DHCP back off. Especially when MJ supposedly has the tool in place that lets you do the static assignment.firefoxsilver9 wrote:I use a Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato Firmware.

Static IP Address
What is you assign a one address range for DHCP and leave DHCP on. That way MJ+ would always have the same address. I want a static address too so I can put MJ+ on the DMZ. Did MJ support give you any idea when static IP would work?

Re: Static IP Address
I looked and I don't think diff VLAN's are possible; remember that this s a home-grade router so I don't think it was designed for something like that.[email protected] wrote:What is you assign a one address range for DHCP and leave DHCP on. Who knows, they said they have to look into it and get back in touch w/ me. That pretty much tells me I'll never hear back about this. Maybe they'll figure it out and make it part of a future update.

you should be able to leave DHCP on and do the manual assignments via the router and not the individual clients. Even though the DHCP is on, as long as you assign the clients an IP address linked to their MAC address in the router's settings, it will give out those "Perferred" IP addresses when the client requests an IP address from the DHCP on your router. my old TRENDnet had this option and according to the Belkin router, it does as well.x2lacrosse wrote:Yep, that's the "indirect" method that I have already used. I appreciate your help and I know about the process you're talking about, but I think you're completely missing my point in that I don't want to turn on DHCP on my router. I leave it off and also shrink the address range, both act as more security measures for my home network.firefoxsilver9 wrote:You should be able to leave DHCP on and do the manual assignments via the router and not the individual clients. However, I've found that I must leave the DHCP server on for the MJ+ to work until they figure out how to get their static IP tool working.
Ok...I see this discussion is something similar to what I am trying to do. I am trying to assign a static IP address to the MJ+ device and using my.magicjack.com/ Network Settings will not set the IP to the device. I just dont see a way how you can set a static IP address on the device that is in my network. The only established session between magicjack provider and my MJ+ device is:
Session 83AE0B9C (10.240.16.177:64026)=>(216.234.70.128:5070) udp SIS_OPEN
So I assume if that was an established "tunnels" it might be possible, but I doubt it.
I also have a LAN without DHCP server and have no intention of installing one for security reasons. Currently I have MJ+ running behind another router (LinkSys E4200) that has DHCP enabled.
Yes you can use DHCP reservation, but that means that you still need a DHCP server in your network to operate MJ+.
So the real question is how do you assing a static IP address to the MJ+???? Just like any other host running any Microsoft OS, UNIX OS, Cisco IOS, Network printers, just like any other device produced on this planet, it offeres DHCP and STATIC IP assignment as well.
Anybody????
Anybody?!??!

Why can't you just turn on the DHCP at boot up then shut it down after 1 minute? It should be a trivial matter on any decent platform, Windows, Linux, etc. Plenty of DHCPD servers available for free on these platforms and a script could enable it for just long enough to do MAC-based DHCP/IP assignment.
Error 23, about 4 hours of chat support, pretty much useless repitition.
I was told to use static IP, which I did. Still got 23 after a few minutes. Told to setup DMZ etc, which I did. Workd for a bit then 23 again.
After 4 more sessions of changing router settings etc, without result, hooked MJ+ to a port on a Mikrotik router configured as a swtich and connected to my Linksys WRT54G.
Lo and behold, the monitoring capability of the Mikrotik showed that the MJ+ was NOT using the Static address assigned on the MJ web page, but was getting a DHCP (dynamic) IP address! Whoa. This would certainly munge any firewall port fowarding settings you had in place for the static IP address.
Unfortunately, I my chat sessions with tech support keep getting broken, presumably by something tech support does over live session, dunno for sure. Now the chat server is too busy and won't respond.
It would be interesting to see if these problems are associated with a specific range of serial numbers. Mine is 1130201541822

No problem. There was a member a couple months ago who was going bat shiv crazy trying to set up static ip. The site actually takes the information so you would assume it works right? He also spent countless hours with chat support. They kept having him change settings on his router and even remotely accessed his computer to set it up. The problem was, there isn't anything to set up because it doesn't work!! LOL. He was livid. He finally got a chat agent who told him they don't support static ip and the site doesn't work. It really all depends on who you get in chat support.
Also, all routers have different options, so I'm sure it can be done with the correct router and firmware. Just doesn't work on the site.
