Porting old number to MJ question

Post by KyDan »

Santa brought me a new magic jack plus.
I want to keep my old ATT number.
Should I register my MJ first and let it assign me a new number
temporarily and then later try to port my old number to it
or should I register AND port my old number at the same time?

OR are both methods workable?

Also I saw an old post that said porting from ATT took 10 days.
It that really how long it takes?

Thanks!
Peace!

Porting home number to MJ

Post by SailorDave »

I recommend taking your time on this decision. There are lots of issues with MJ that you should explore before trying to port the home number. You can work most of them down b4 you port and allow enough time to experience all the ills of MJ b4 you make the committment. The time to actually accomplish the porting is very variable, in my case it was just over 5 business days. Your mileage may vary. DO NOT cancel your old telephone service until the porting has been accomplished. Meanwhile while waiting, both numbers will be active and usable.

I am planning to transfer my number the same way...but I am unsure, since their live chat people are not very bright, what would be some downsides that I am maybe missing too?

I guess both our best plans would be to proceed cautiously.
I'm going to drop my ATT DSL line and switch to Insight cable internet.
During this transition I'll keep my ATT land line AND play around with
my MJ plus.
Once I'm satisfied with my new internet/router operation AND if
my MJ plus is still working OK, I will decide if I want to drop the land line.
Of course I will get my land line number ported to MJ before I
call ATT and tell them to disconnect service.

(FYI if you want to speak to a real live PERSON at ATT just
say the word "disconnect" and the robot voice will switch you
to a live "retention specialist".)

Reading here there are lots of folks who had a working MJ that is now
malfunctioning. Guess I'm gonna wait and see for at least a month or 2.

Good luck with yours!!
Peace!

porting

Post by mjplus2000 »

I successfully ported my att number to magic jack plus. I had dsl riding over dial tone with att. Of course I knew when I put the port request in that att would disconnect my dsl too. Seems that att just puts a disconnect order in without even contacting the customer. I could've put any ones number(including yours) in the port request. Doesn't make me feel real comfortable that everything was done behind the scenes without a verification. Anyway...att should've put a change in instead of a disconnect. I had to call up and request a new service(dry dsl). My dsl service was down a total of 12 hours. att dry dsl is cheaper than cable internet. I've had both and prefer the dsl for a quarter of the price. I barely notice the speed difference and the mj+ works great with it.
