Inbound calls drop after exactly 6 minutes

Post by kzibart »

For the past few months, whenever someone calls my MJ number, exactly 6 minutes into the call I see the MJ program take focus and disconnect the call. It never happens when I dial out, but it happens every time I receive a call.

I can watch the timer on the MJ window, and as soon as it changes from 5:59 to 6:00, the MJ window takes focus and disconnects the call, displaying "Hanging up" in place of the timer just before going back to the normal "idle" display.

It doesn't matter whether I'm active on the PC or idle, whether MJ already has focus or not, whether the application is up or hidden in the tray, or whether I'm using a headset or external handset. I've also disabled USB power savings and tried a few other fixes for disconnection issues. Nothing I've done has had any effect. Obviously I've searched these forums and the Internet in general for similar issues as well.

Any suggestions on how to determine the cause or what else I might try to fix it?

Thanks.

Of course I figure out what's going on almost immediately after posting the question here, after spending countless "6 minute" segments of my life trying to debug it...

It has something to do with my cordless phone being plugged in. I'm no stranger to dropped calls on MJ, and it took me a while to identify the pattern of incoming calls dropping after exactly 6 minutes, thinking it was just regular MJ issues for the longest time. So by the time I realized it, my "new" handset was no longer new to me and didn't seem likely as the culprit.

I was also fairly sure the issue happened both when answering on my headset and on my handset, but I just answered a call on my handset that lasted over 6 minutes. So maybe I was wrong about that, or maybe it just doesn't happen consistently.

Anyway, my new question is whether anyone has ideas on how to keep my handset from disconnecting my incoming calls after 6 minutes when I answer on my headset.

kzibart - i am having the exact same issues as you, i have upgraded to MJ +. from the original MJ.....issue still appears...Inbound Calls drop after 5minutes for me, Outgoing calls seem never to drop.

Been online chat with many MJ Support ppl...and they have just spun this issue in circles with no fix....

it appears to me all these issues started when MJ updated it's software ...but then again...MJ + doesn't use software...and it has the same issue...

have you guys opened ports for the magicJack in your router/modem already? systematic dropping of calls has something to do with your router .

desi.no79, does yours disconnect incoming calls only when you answer using a headset through your PC, or also when answering from an actual phone handset? It seems like mine started when I replaced my cordless phone system. I'm planning to test out the old phone one of these days to see if it really is just the new phone, but I haven't had time to do that yet. I suspect that the phone does something odd 6 minutes after recognizing a "missed call" (because I didn't answer on the handset, it thinks it missed a call). Maybe since the line doesn't actually have a dial tone, due to me actually being on the call, it thinks it needs to fix it and sends some kind of hang up signal? I'm totally guessing here, but it's definitely the handset's fault somehow.

udsting, my router isn't setup to block any ports, so I don't think that's the issue for me. But thanks for the suggestion.

I've been having the same problem with dropped calls. It's getting worse. I've literally spent hours chatting with tech support. Each time I chat with someone they lead me through the same "fixes" that don't fix anything. I am so frustrated. They are obviously chatting with several people at once because it takes sometimes up to 10 minutes for them to reply between each step. I don't know what to do. I like the idea of the magic jack plus, but in actuality it has been nothing but problems. Can anyone help, or should I just try to get my money back?

Hey All

so here is what i tried in the past few days...

=> Plugging network straight from my cable modem to MJ +, no dropped calls for incoming, and Caller ID worked too...

=> Plugged Router back in, calls drop in 5+ minutes

=> Tried a corded phone... inbound calls drop at the same time...

Well to my google discovery i came across this document...and i think it may of fixed this inbound drop calls issue,

see link =>http://zaxa.ca/magicjack-plus-not-worki ... ter-solved

ALSO...i found that in were DMZ is set, i also found an option to "Disable SIP ALG" on my router.... i think this also has resolve my inbound call issue...although i have only Tested this out with ONE inbound call and it lasted 10 + without a drop...

so how about u all try this out and see if it works....

Dropped Call Fixes

Post by justthisonetime »

I have been having a problem with dropped calls in the 6 minute window, both inbound and outbound. Here are the fixes the tech person walked me thru, but after I connected the USB directly, a test call I made lasted over 10 minutes before the software installation finally disconnected me. The other fixes are just for good measure. So far so good, hopefully it continues...

In case it helps anyone else:

Becky: Hello, how may I help you?
ME: My phone keeps disconnecting during calls.
Becky: Is your magicjack plugged in now directly to the USB port of your computer?
ME: no, a usb hub
Becky: please plug it directly to the computer
Becky: May I know what is your operating system?
ME: vista, testing a call now
Becky: we need to do some fixes
Becky: Please click the “START”(WINDOWS LOGO) button and select “Control Panel”. On the upper left side, click "Classic View”.
Becky: Please double click “Windows Firewall”. A dialogue box named ‘Windows Firewall’ will pop up. Then click on "Change Settings". (make sure it is On so that we can add the ports)
Becky: • Please select the “Exceptions” tab and click the “Add Port…” button; Then type MJ1 as name and 5060 as Port number. Then check the UDP round button and click OK.
Becky: • Now please click the “Add Port…” button again. This time please type MJ2 as name and 5070 as Port number. Then check the UDP round button and click OK. Then click OK (On the Windows Firewall)
Becky: • Please go back to control panel; then double click “Internet Options” A dialogue box named ‘Internet Properties’ will pop up.
Becky: Please click on the “Security” tab and click “Trusted Sites” then click the “Sites…” button.
Becky: • Please click on the “Security” tab and click “Trusted Sites” then click the “Sites…” button.
Becky: • In the box for “Add this Web site to the zone:”, please type https://reg.talk4free.com then click “Add” (it will be added in the Web sites: box)
Becky: • Doing the same process, please add https://my.magicjack.com , https://data.magicjack.com and https://*.talk4free.com then click Close button
Becky: • Now please select the “Privacy” tab and set the Slider to Low (This is only for now, you can set the setting back to medium later). Then “Apply “ and OK
Becky: Please click the link to download and run the magicJack upgrade:

Hope it helps.
