AT&T Mobile Hotspot with MJ & connecting multiple ph

Post by Mitzy »

I have had a dead-slow dial-up connection for over 12 years with no high-speed internet available to me in my area. A few weeks ago, I learned about and purchased an AT&T Mobile Hotspot Elevate 4G so I now have high-speed internet! Was really excited until I realized that the 5GB a month doesn't even come close to my needs. I've already used 7GB in just 3 weeks of use. It cost $50 a month for the 5GB and $10 per GB over.

Then, I got Magic Jack last week in attempts of saving some money. First of all, I wasn't sure how MJ would work using the AT&T Mobile Hotspot. Still not sure how much GB it is using. Also, wasn't sure how things should connect with MJ since I can not connect the ethernet cord. I dealt with MJ chat support for several days and multiple hours trying to figure out everything. They are worthless in my opinion! Why can't they just pick up their MJ and talk with you on the phone?!?!?!

Anyhow, I have 4 phones in my house that I would like to work with MJ. I fired AT&T as my home phone provider and kept my old home phone number. But now, I can only get my cordless phone to work with MJ and I want all phones to work through out the house! I'm not sure how to make the connections with MJ and all the phone lines that come together in a box in my basement.

My husband has a 11 year old Sony Vaio PC and I just got a new Samsung Laptop a couple weeks ago. The old Sony has to use a Netgear N150 Wireless USB Adapter in order to be connected to the Mobile Hotspot. I am wondering if I need a router of some kind to make everything work together properly and hopefully conserve the GB usage with the Mobile Hotspot.

Thank you in advance for any information you can help me with!

As far as a multi phone setup. You could buy a cordless sytem which comes with 4 or more handsets, amd place said handsets throughout the home. Or you can connect a phone cable from the MJ ( where you would normally connect a phone) into a phone jack on the wall. this SHOULD make all of your phones work ( it depends on the REN of each phone)FIRST, make sure the incoming phone connector in the box from your TelCo is DISCONNECTED at that box ( usually just a modular plug) otherwise you could fry your MJ.

Buy something like this. Can't go wrong for the price (feature packed).

Thanks for the advise. Issues not worked out totally as yet. BUT, I will most likely be getting rid of the Mobile Hotspot as of this coming Monday! If I return it within 30 days, I am not bound to their contract. I was referred to a satellite internet company in my area that offers 100GB a month for $40 a month!!! They are coming Monday to survey and install if all goes well. Free installation and rental of equipment is $3 a month! AND...no contract. I have a couple friends that use it and are extremely happy with their service. A router will be provided so I can connect ethernet. Will plug the phone system in my basement up with magic jack and run the ethernet and phone line to the router. Crossing my fingers that all goes well. I may still get new phones with multiple extensions, just depends on how things go come Monday.

I would do a little more reading around.... I dont think the MJ works very well with satellite...
I have used sat phones in the bush and there is some serious lag...

Agree... Sat is NOT the way to go with MJ, sorry. WAY to much latency ( lag time). You will be sadly disappointed with sat and MJ.

My mistake! It's not satellite! Not sure why I was thinking that. It is wireless internet. http://www.csinet.net/Index.php

The only things you need to worry about is how many else are using the WiFi signal and the quality of it. To many users equal crappy VOIP, same with a crappy signal.
Hopefully you get a test period first before locking into any contract to see how it works out for you.

They will do a survey to see if the signal is good. There is no contract to sign.
