Dropping phone calls

Post by GuyS »

I've had Magic Jack for a couple of weeks now. In the last few days it has started to drop calls. I would say that this happens 1 out of 10 calls. What can be done?

Dropping Calls

My Magic Jack Plus was working fine until recently. The past 2 weeks, my calls have been dropping at least 6 to 7 times per week. Is there anything that can be done?

Still the same here. I have moved my MJP to a USB on a computer to see if this solves it. I was also getting poor reception thus voice breakups. Also tried running as a service but that was worse.

I think there has been some change at the server level affecting the Plus. Hoping someone gets to them before my wife kills me. I disconnected bell a few weeks ago and she is on the warpath.

Update!!!! I contacted ISP and found that my router was not allowing the speed for upload that I needed. I removed the router and hooked to the router on the cable modem and there is a drastic improvement. My wife says its is better today but she is still sitting on the fence.

Please try to check your router's brand and model number and open the MJ ports from this link: www.portforward.com

I have a Wireless D-Link 615 router. In the address mentioned above takes me to a page that I have to pay $29.95 but says there is documentation if I want to do the work myself (I do...I bought the Magic Jack in an effort to save money).

What firmware version are you running on your router?

Magic Jack is getting worse and worse and is now dropping calls 1 out of 4 calls. It only worked well for the first month.

That is not the latest firmware and 3.12 fixed some VoIP problems

You best be downloading 3.13NA and installin'

Thanks laserjobs. I have just upgraded my firmware as per your suggestion. I post improvements/results over the next little while to see if that was the issue.

Well upgrading the firmware for my router did not work. I am still getting dropped calls. I've read about this port forwarding thing but am a little reluctant to "throw good money after bad" by spending the $29.95 to facilitate port forwarding via their app. I've read others with MagicJack Plus having problems with DLink routers.

Port forwarding

you don't need to buy an app to port fwd, you can do it from within the router's configuration / admin pages

I'm not familiar with this more technical stuff. Can you describe how to do it?

Dropped Calls

Post by shvingy »

I have been using MJ for 3 years now. Over the past 6 months we have been having an increase in dropped calls followed by no dial tone specifically between 2-4 am est. Also we have the occasional funny ring when someone is calling during the day. MJ chat has been trying to help but the misery continues. Now I am working with my ISP to eliminate internet spikes as the cause.

Our MJ is running on a thin client with an apple airport extreme router. Any ideas would be appreciated and I will post any updates!

Dropped Calls

Post by AZCeltic »

So far I've seen lots of discussion regarding routers, firmware upgrades on routers, etc., but no real answers as to why calls are dropped after several minutes. Is there a time-out built into the MJ unit?

No it "appears" to be a compatability problem between MJ and some routers.
MJ's time out is 90 min per call. It used to be 120 min but it also has been as low as 30 min. But never several min ( though several min lined up to one another can equal 90 or more :) unless there is a problem.
