Buy New MJP, Transfer Your Time, Loose 1 Free Yr of Service

The latest MagicJack Plus will allow you to transfer your old standard MagicJack number as well as ALL of your prepaid service time from your standard MagicJack to your new MagicJack Plus.

However even though you have purchased a new MagicJack Plus that comes with a "free" paid year of service with the initial purchase... I have been told by tech support that if you transfer your old number and all of your prepaid service time to your new MagicJack Plus account you will NOT be given that "free" year of service even though you have paid for it when you purchased the new Magicjack Plus.

I was informed that the only way to receive the "free" year of service with the new MJP purchase is to register the MJP as a totally new account with no time transferred over to the new MJP account.

Agreed the annual cost of service time is fantastic but shame on YMAX for screwing new MJP accounts that transfer over their prepaid time to the new MJP account out of a "free" year of service.

MJP still rocks but that policy just sucks. Hey, thanks for letting me vent. I feel better now.

It works like number porting of the same MJ to MJ device. If you'll let them transfer your old number to your new device manually, the expiry date of the new device will not be changed and lose the one year service of it but if you'll register it under another number as new account, you can use the whole year but not the remaining service of the old device.

It is still unfortunate that you have to loose that one year of service.

I understand that with these annual service prices it is a whimpering complaint loosing that one year but it is a complaint never the less... and it still sucks.

But you know... I feel a lot better now... I can handle it. MJP still rocks!

I ended up installing the new MJ+, and you only have to add the new device to your EXISTING account. All the posts on this board keep saying NEW account, and it's wrong. After you add the new MJ, then you can port your landline # to it. Interestingly, I screwed up, and in my haste, ported my number before I added / registered the new device, and it ended up porting my landline # to my old MJ. After 1.5 hrs w/tech support (where we ended up right where we began), the solution turned out to be to change the phone # of the old MJ back to its original # (simple dropdown box), which then shows the ported number in your account but no longer assigned. Register the new MJ choosing any number, and then next to the new MJ, the dropdown box will show the unassigned ported #. Just choose that, and it was done.

This option came to mind....

Set up the new MJ+ under your existing account with its own number.
Forward all calls to the old number to the new MJ+ number.
You can still make outgoing calls from the old MJ if desired.

Both devices should keep their service plans in place.

Not ideal, but if you let the 1 year of the new MJ+ run out, then transfer the old MJ number to the new MJ+ you get full benefit.

In retrospect...

Loosing one prepaid package year of service is easily offset by the opportunity for a standard MJ owner to transfer their prepaid service plan years over to their new MJP.

I felt fortunate when I was able to transfer over the five year plan I had with my standard MJ to my new MJP. I believe that there is about a $30 difference in cost between the MJ and MJP 5-year plans ($69.95 as opposed to $99.95).

So, it could be assumed that anyone who owns a standard MJ and would like to own a new MJP should load up their standard MJ service plan at the lower standard MJ prices before they transfer their service plan over to the new MJP.

It was a wise marketing move... making the MJ and MJP available at such low prices! Super low landline rates have arrived for the average consumer!

Now if ADT would recognize MJP service the same way they have recently recognized Vonage we would be in great shape...

Wow, I hadn't realized that the standard MJ 5-year plan went up to the same amount as the MJP 5-year plan but it makes marketing sense.

MJP's MSRP is $69.95 unless you can be lucky enough to obtain it either through the Ymax Corporate website or an online or regular retail vendor when it is on sale with a $35 discount, which will make it available at an incredible $34.95.

When purchased on sale the MJP initial cost was less than the original standard MJ purchase.

With MJ's required minimum bandwidth upload speed of 128 kb/s MagicJack appears to be the cheapest way to make long distance calls through VoIP in the US, Canada, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

The power issue with MJP can be addressed at your house by plugging your cable modem, router, MJP and phone into a UPS. This should give you about an hour before you lose telephone service and covers most short power interruptions.

If I had to do it all over again... I wouldn't hesitate to ditch my standard MJ (even though I don't know what to do with it) to obtain a new MJP even if I had to pay the full MSRP.

My TOTAL out of pocket expense for MJP, MJ, Sales Tax, Regulatory Compliance Expense, UPS Ground Shipping and Handling and Service plans, which have provided me with reliable service since 9-12-08 paid through and including 9-15-15 is: $190.12. Remember that this total reflects the cost of everything associated with my MJP... over a 7 year period... $190.12!

This does not reflect the cost of my Internet cable access because I attribute that cost to allowing me to access the Internet with my computer, which I would have regardless. Note: An MJP 5-year extended service plan at full price of $99.75 added on to my already existing service would DROP the annual and monthly costs even lower!

Broken down I have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy unlimited calling to anywhere in North America, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands for 7 years (from 9-12-08 to 9-15-15) for the incredible total cost of $27.16 per year ... or $2.26 per month!

I know cable service is not available in many isolated areas in the US but it is hard to comprehend why more people aren't swamping Ymax for orders. MagicJack Plus VoIP Rocks!
