Porting NOT available yet for Canadian numbers

Post by xanderhal »

Hi all,

Just an FYI here for potential Canadian buyers. I bought a MJP yesterday in Calgary, Alberta with the strict intention of replacing our land line and porting the number over.

However, I wasn't able to port my number during registration with a message of "We're sorry, your telephone number cannot be transferred at this time".

Got it confirmed from someone ("Prince") on the live chat this morning that porting is not available in Canada yet with no ETA of when it will be available.

Now I am trying to decide whether to pay for a new Calgary number, or just get the free magic jack number and wait until porting is available. :(

I did the exact same thing here in Ontario on the 30 December.

Hopefully someone will notify us when it will be available or at least give us an approximation how long it will be.

Just tried it with a new mj+ and got the same error message when trying to port a Victoria b.c. number. Will have to return it to the store as its no good to me without the number porting.

the pot number feature under magicjack is for US numbers only as for CANADIAN numbers we are still working on it. But need not to worry for once it is out it will be posted to our homepage .I do advise you to keep an eye on it from now on for the latest update.Thank you so much.

Just got the above answer from live chat at Magic Jack support. So "coming soon" is the true answer.

I don't pretend to understand the actual mechanics of porting at all. It seems like it would be a pretty easy thing to set up, but obviously isn't. And you poor people in Canada keep getting the short end of it all. NetTalk just started their porting, but it too is not available yet for Canadian numbers.

Doesn't make much sense to me. You guys got extra thick "porting cables" up there because of the cold weather that makes the process more difficult? 8)

Better to have one and not need it....than to need one and not have it!

This is the response I got on MagicJack chat half an hour ago:

Jenawin: We do accept number porting as long as you have a US based phone number.

Also prior to advising my current number is cellular:

Jenawin: I recommend you to port a land line phone number

If someone gets a Canadian number ported, I'd like to know.

ALSO note this... I have twice been told-- this AM by Sammy--that unless the area code AND prefix match it's long distance to call IN to MagicJack. EVEN IF phones are sitting side by side.

IF anyone has experience that shows this is not the case, please advise.

MagicJack is a great OUTcall device in my experience. Excellent for travel even at free WIFI stops.

yes, this is obviously the case, as anyone calling INTO your MJ is calling the area code of your MJ#....so if your area code is NY, then all incoming calls are actually going thru NY...so even though they are side by side makes no difference. But that also works for us...if you have a family member or such that lives long distance...you get a MJ# with THEIR area code (and if necessary, prefix as well depending on size of area code coverage..ie area code 905), and they can phone INTO you for FREE!!!!!! And then of course, any calls in the world between 2 MJ's are Free.

Yes, 'this is obviously the case...' Or NOT?

If I am in New York calling another number with the same area code, or in Vancouver which has two area codes, I expect to call from one to another without long distance charges, as I do with my land lines and cell phones because the numbers are BOTH New York numbers or BOTH Vancouver numbers!

My point was meant to be, IF the AREA CODE and the PREFIX do not match--the call is as if long distance if the call is TO a MagicJack number, and of course not from a MagicJack number, in which case it's not applicable because, as you point out, anywhere in the world calls between two MagicJack numbers are made at no extra charge, nuthin's free!

IF I want someone with only local calling to be able to call me at my MagicJack number I can use a MagicJack number for their area BUT the area code AND PREFIX must match.

This is what I've gotten from MagicJack chat TWICE in past year or two though I had to persist through much evasiveness.

I cannot call my MagicJack without it being long distance even if one number is 604-288... and the other 604-990... And not if one is 604-288... and these are BOTH Vancouver area code and prefixes and I can on any other phone that I know of, mobile, land or other VOIPS. And on any phone but MJ I can also call any 788 AREA code, also a Vancouver Metro area code.

It's so weird it's hard to grasp, but twice I have gone over this with MagicJack. I've been very specific and the answer is AREA CODE and PREFIX of the IN-coming non MagicJack call MUST MATCH or it's considered a long distance call- I suppose by companies not impressed by MagicJack competition.

I told the agents I can call from one number in my area code to another number in my area code. Prefixes do not match and it's NOT ordinarily long distance. Reply was, 'not with MagicJack.'

If you can show me this infomation is wrong, please do let me know. So far, I think MagicJack is a great OUT-call device, but as an IN-call device is very limited.

well what works for me with my CDN area code 905, is if it isn't long distance within the normal region, it ISN'T long distance with MJ either, same prefix or not..mine is 905-581-xxxx, and I get local calls all the time from 905-335-xxxx or any other Burlington prefix.336,637, etc), BUT any prefix from Oakville, which is long distance to Hamilton normally, IS long distance with MJ too....why it doesn't work that way for you in Vancouver, I'm not sure.

Post by monckton »

Here is the answer I just received from Joane (Livechat) :

"We are not able to process a Transfer Number with Canadian Numbers yet. It is an endeavor on our Part to be able to transfer a Canadian number.. Our Departments are working on the Interconnection Agreement with the Canadian Phone Carriers. Unfortunately, they are declining the proposal. However, we are doing our best with this Regards.. Hoping for your kind understanding."
