Number of rings before MJ VM picks up.

Number of rings before MJ VM picks up.
I have a new MJ+.
Is their any way to change the number of rings before MJ voice mail picks up? I understand it is set to four rings.
For a number of reasons, I want to use my own answering machine, not MJ's. And, I want it to pick up in four rings. Not three, not five, not six, but four.
Right now with my machine set to four, it picks up some of the calls, and MJ picks up the others. Not a workable situation.
I'd appreciate any help on this.
Thanks,
G

Thanks Joe. I was afraid of that.
I had one of the old MJ's and never did use it much because I could not disable MJ's VM.
Frankly, when I bought the MJ+ I had forgotten about the VM issue and so not sure I will be able to use it.
Any idea why MJ forces you to use their VM? Pain in the butt if you ask me!

Joe:
You are absolutely correct, but let me try this on you, and others on the forum, that are much more knowledgeable about phone networks than I.
Seems to me I read in a business periodical awhile back that the reason that MJ could offer such inexpensive phone service was that they (the company that owns MJ) has it's own phone network and gets paid by other carriers for each incoming call that terminates, and is connected, on its network.
By forcing every call to either go to a customers VM on the third ring, or to MJ's VM on the fourth ring, MJ guarantees that they will be paid on incoming calls regardless of whether a live body answers the call or not. Makes MJ money, so why should they care that it pisses off some of their customers.
If what I'm suggesting is true, I think what they overlook is that the vast majority of customers, like me, that don't want to use MJ"s VM, will use their own VM system, so MJ will be paid for incoming calls no matter what.
I am a long time OOMA customer (they let you set the number of rings before their VM picks up), and purchased the MJ+ for use at a vacation residence where I thought it might solve a phone problem for me. Not being able to use my own VM however, is a deal killer for me, so the MJ+ will spend most of it's time in the junk drawer with the original MJ I bought and couldn't use for the same reason. Guess I'll just have to tote my OOMA box to the second residence and use it there also. That was what I was trying to avoid, for a number of reasons.
Oh well, I'm just a customer that MJ doesn't seem to care about!
I'd welcome thoughts on this from any of you "phone network" guys/gals.

For a few bucks and your ORIG MJ there is always MAGICFEATURES, which will let your phone "ring forever" http://www.pcphonesoft.com/ or till your own answering machine picks up. As of right now they have no plans on supporting the MJ+gtsone wrote:Joe:

If you have an original MJ you can get magicringforever from pcphonesoft and completely disable MJ's voicemail. While MJ+ is great 3rd party aps with the original MJ on a thin client are hard to beat for the price.gtsone wrote:

Yes with MJ and MJ+ ONLY the number shows, UNLESS you use Magicfeatures with the orig MJ. Then you get the name as well as long as it is in your speed dial list. Prior to MJ changing to version 2.0 you used to get the name if it was in your Mj contact list. Now you have to have it in the MagicFeatures speed dial, but you DO get the name as well as number. Of course some phones, like my Uniden will display the name if that number is in your phone contact list along with a name.gtsone wrote:Thanks for the inputs. I'll figure it out, and get over it.
BTW, am I also correct in my understanding that the caller ID only shows a phone number and no name?
Sabresfan, as a fellow OOMA Telo user, what prompted you to also become a MJ user?

I had MJ long before Ooma. I picked my Ooma up for about $130 from woot earlier this year. I figured why not for that price. Premier on Ooma was nice during the trial period but at $10 a month is way overpriced when I can get similar features from GV for free and Magicfeatures for the few dollars I spent awhile ago. I can't say Ooma was the best money I've ever spent but I had a case of beer already in the fridge and was well into it when I purchased it.gtsone wrote:

Old post, but ranks high in Google for this question. Here's an updated answer: Yes, you can adjust the duration before voicemail picks up, or you can turn it off entirely.
Turn Voicemail On/Off/Delay
For customers who have regular answer machines, you can turn off your magic jack voicemail, and for customers who would like to adjust the amount of rings can now do so by adjusting the delay length by default the magic jack is set to 25 seconds which means it picks up on the 5th ring.
To turn off or change the delay settings just log onto your Magic Jack Control Panel
Step 1. Hover your mouse over call features tab at the top then select Voicemail On/Off/Delay

Step 2. to turn off the voicemail all together select and switch to off position, , and to adjust the amount of rings till the voicemail pics up just adjust the time by clicking on drop down menu.
