Further MJ adventures

Well I got my connection back by opening 5060 and 5070 ports. And I think you are right about the issue being my modem/router. From what I have read the Motorola SBG900 has issues with VOIP. No wonder I got it for free, get what you pay for I guess.

The guy who said some router/modems have buggy software was right I guess, and you shouldnt have to open ports. Now what to do. Hmmmmm. have to look at the cost benefit of buying new router vs risk of opening ports on the SBG900 vs just keeping my pay as you go cell (Don't make a lot of calls anyway). Decisions, decisions.

I should have done more research on the issues with MJ just like I do with any other product I buy.

I'm curious as to what Routers DO work, and which Routers DON"T Work. Can different members of this forum say what they have and if they experienced this problem or not.

I'm considering using a new D-Link router that is wired (not wireless).

I've been having the same exact issue as everyone else. I've tried every single "fix" I've seen posted, tried 3 different PC's, two different OS's, nothing has worked.

Oh well, if mine doesn't "fix itself" as some have reported theirs did, back to Vonage I go...

Same Problem

I have the same problem. The first year I had MJ, it was great! Now, It takes several tries before I can hear the person I am calling and he can hear me. I'm about fed up and ready to get a different phone service.

By the way...

I am not using a Router. I have the MJ plugged into my computer directly. It is running Windows XP. Does anyone think it might help to buy a powered USB hub?

My problem is recent and intermittent. About 1/2 of my calls, I hear nothing but the phone rings. I can hang up and call back and get volume. It does not matter if it is with headset or handset.

I fixed my problem!

I fixed it by signing up with Teleblend and unplugging the Magic Jack. The first year I had Magic Jack, it worked great, but it is worth paying Teleblend $99 a year to have a phone service that works consistently. And I don't have to have my computer on for it to work! Since unplugging the MJ, I have discovered that my computer runs much faster, too![/b]

Anybody been having this problem recently?

For those who had it before, did it ever go away or did your MJ just not work ever again. I am not in the country so my other option is Skype at least. It started happening intermittently late last week and today started to happen every time. I spoke with chat and their worthless. They won't even send me a new one because I bought mine from best buy instead of them

You are not alone. Since the middle of September I've been having the same problem: works OK sometimes and other times I cannot hear the other party or they cannot hear me or nobody hears anything. And the really frustrating thing is there is no way to predict whether a given call will work or not. One call is OK and the next not.

I too have gone the tech support chat route which was useless. It seems as if the only thing that works (for a short time only) is a reset from their end. But to get to that, you have to go through the brain damage of another ineffective script remedy.

I am using a thin client especially configured for MJ which worked great until last month. I've plugged the MJ into other computers with the same results as above. Really hope someone more technically minded than me can come up with a solution.

Yeah and after trying to troubleshoot it with their chat, I've gone from calls not working all the time to calls not working at all....I really hope they fix it if it is on their end

nutella012 - I noticed the same thing, but I didn't want to jinx it. 1 or 2 days does not a trend make. My fingers are crossed; hopefully it will be smooth sailing from here on out. I sure hope so since I renewed for 5 years over the summer.

I'm having the very same problem. I hear a dial tone, dial, the dialpad shows active, but can't hear a ring on the other line. Used to be only once in a while and I hang up then redial, and the call would go through. Now, very infrequently, the call goes through.

What finally got my MJ to work reliably was connecting the thin client directly to the router. Previous I was using a wireless connection which worked great for a month and then didn't work well at all.

Now the MJ works almost as well or as well as POTS. For the past 6 weeks, all has been fine.

I'll keep watching this board...

Then I tried making a phone call.
1. Picked up the phone and got a dial tone.
2. Dialed a phone number.
3. Nothing.

I read the article and made sure along with the other ports that were opened, I also opened:

TCP Ports List: 80 (HTTP), 443 (HTTPS)
UDP Ports List: 5060, 5070, 10000-65535

Once I did this, it was like magic. I can now make and receive calls on my phone and soft phone with no problem.

I don't know if this will continue to work or if this will work for anybody else, but for me it was great. Hopefully I won't have to come in here anytime soon and say it isn't working anymore, but for now I am a happy man.

THANK YOU. This also worked for me after wasting time on the MagicJack chat line, and also searching the web. What bothers me is that so many UDP Port are open and security goes down the tubes. Any comments please on how to make this better?

Follow up:

A big problem is the Verizon DSL Westel modem which blocks a lot of Ports for security. In my system opening ports 62000 to 65535 works for now. My question is why does MJ uses these high UDP ports and why don't they document this?

If only wives were as easy to mute as computers, what a wonderful world.....I didn't really say that.
