Does anyone know if the serial number of the dongle is being sent, is there a way to sniff the packets and reveal absolutely everything?

I can understand that the "The serial number is what uniquely identifies the MJ. It is encoded and encrypted in the dbkey" but that was never required before to make the ATAs work. Plus, does the SIP 2.0 protocol allow for the serial number to be passed thru the communication? I would think the serial number is what they use to bind your phone number to....just my thoughts

Yes I know how to find it but if its being encrypted and sent in the packet how can an ata send that if they are looking for it?

Use pmdump.exe dump it to a file then use strings.exe to convert unicode into plain ascii then search for your serial num and how is sent to server

I saw my serial # several times but I do not know what it does may be some one other than me should do it also

if you are "seeing your several times" pls post a copy of what you saw and "X" out the parts you dont need anyone seeing in the serial so that others here may be able to decipher it or come up with an idea.

did you see this info under the SIP description? TCP/IP ? or what area of the packet are you seeing this?

That sounds like an application call and not anything going thru the SIP protocol or tcp-ip. Unless you are seeing this in the networking communication to their voip system with the dongle plugged in, I dont think it counts. For the serial number argument to be valid, I would like to think that you can see it on the network using a network protocol analyzer like wireshark.
Has anyone seen their serial number using wireshark??

If you see it in wireshark it would be encrypted "sj" that tells me something it has to do with the register SJ-DISCOVERY-ANNAUNCEMENT-PROTOCOL

The dkey is used in the initial provisioning of the MJ, it's not needed by the ata because it is manually provisioned by you when you fill in the user and password fields.

I think MJ is using certificate now after the upgrade.

What if what we think is the ProxyUserPassword (or name) is not really the password anymore? What if they left the old code in there but are not really using it?

Test: Somebody do a MD5 hash on the 20 character password they have extracted and see if it matches the hash being sent by the dongle when it registers. I am not set up to do this test but would be interested in the result.

I have some old saved Wireshark capture from 2008. Compare with the recent update

1) 401 unauthorized then 200 OK
2) User-Agent: ENSR2.5.47.0-IS11-RMRG0-RG900-xxxxxxxx
3) realm="stratus.com"

all these are normal and can be found on both sessions.

However, as "greg7usa" suggested, MJ now use TLS during the register process, which can be found clearly from Wireshark capture, so we need the client key to start with, and use eyeBeam to do the test. Even so, since there is no TLS support in the popular PAP2T(and lots of other ATAs), it might be the end of the party.

imho, if your ATA is still working, consider yourself lucky but its just a matter of time for MJ to update all servers/accounts to the new register process.

could a script be made like we had for caller id change that the ata would go through the pc via script to register. then we couldplay and see what it is loking for. Not sure if it could be done but a idea any way.

My opinion as to why they are enforcing use of their usb dongle... The magicjack software uses advertising banners in which I think helps them to make money. Dont forget, they are the only ones ( I think) that offer voip service for 19.95 per year people, not per month. Can you blame them for trying to protect their interests? But at the same time, there are methods to block the magicjack pop-ups and even to run it as a service so that tells me that not too many people give a rats azz about the banner ads or spending more money on something else other than what we were looking for, voip service for very cheap.
Hopefully someone will crack this latest effort to block our ATAs in the near future. Another idea myself and some friends had and maybe some of you on this forum may have though about, is to get a small profile PC with minimum specs like maybe 512mb ram, 40gb hdd, windows xp, and set it up on the side with the dongle and forget about it. Once you have it up and running and configured, you dont need to have a keyboard, mouse or monitor, just tuck it away and give yourself remote access to it. You still wont see any banner ads and we still will have cheap voip service. Also, for those of you that like to download torrents, you can make this your torrent box also. (a cheap laptop with usb 2.0 would work too). In the end this solution is still way cheaper on the monthly electric bill and the folks at MJ can go F$#@ themselves. Ebay is a place to start.

I was wondering if one of the staff members could possibly pm me. I was discussing the scenerio we face with our magicjacks to a buddy of mine. He gave me an idea that might be a viable solution to one of the issues with the magicjack, albeit not the ATA issue

I know their has been mention of company people frequenting the forum thus asking for a admin/mod contact me so they can ask an appropriate person to try this since I'm unable to do so.

If they make it so hard I was wondering. Can someone invent something like a MJ buddy? like a mini dockingstation for MJ that uses circuites and other eproms rathter than a cpu and would be plugged in to a 12 volt adapter . This could replace the notion of having a computer turned on all day and not having to pay a big electricity bill. this way you could use the dongle and port it over to your needs....

Im not an electrician, but well just a thought.....

I have it configured on thin client. Works perfect, but the call quality is not as great as ATA.

Any idea how much power does a HP T5720 takes? and how much it costs per month when kept running 24x7?

I know my thin client only pulls about 9 watts which is not going to be very noticeable on the electric bill. I agree, the callers voice gets choppy at times when my pap2 was perfect.

Curious, how do you guys go this number? In San Diego, it is about $0.13 per kwh.

So 9 watts will cost less than $1 per month. Did I miss something or I need to go back to elementary school?

Just to let you know i had a MJ since last month
never did an update since i bought it
and yesterday i tested in my ata with the old
credentials and everything and its working fine
calls can come in and call out.

MJ is on a PAP2 register 300 ms
and proxy server is with 01
old credentials but never update the device.

Even at announced horror cost of 31.77c per kwh in NYC, it only turns out to just above $2/month.
9watts * 24 hours * 30 days / 1000 = 6.48 kwh * 31.77c = $2.059/month
while the US average is 11c or a cost of 71 cents/month + the cost of the MJ service.
In my mind this is quite a lot cheaper than any VoIP service attached to an ATA...

I just got finished setting up a wyse thin client. call quality is ok but not as good as my spa2100. I am tired of working the spa and mj so I just bailed and set this one up. it is not one if those predone ones for mj I just did it myself.

thnks to all of you who tried to figure it out and congrats to those whom did, but Bah to those whom would not share the info to setup the ATAs since the 6/9 upgrade.

Don't know if it would work or not, but since this little adapter doesn't pass any power to the usb device and it has been well documented that MJ shuld be plugged into a powered hub or port I'm guessing it is moot.
