 Here I am again with the same old problem... I tried the skin thing and that does not work. I just now edited the registry, very carefully, as instructed by vdot and guess what...my calls still go immediately to voice mail! I have none of the other problems I have read about and this would be great if I could just receive calls.

The instructions provided here to disable voice mail are not meant to resolve the problems you're having. The only thing I can suggest is try tech chat http://tinyurl.com/27pzpm
and have them refresh your account and see if that helps.

Not being even a novice I am somewhat confused about the method of removing bigskin, making some changes in the bare ini file...and so on. There must be something that I missed...duhhhhhh! Where does one find the unmasked folder (the file name) where we make the changes? Joevv's procedure seems easy enough but there is a step or two missing to us beginners . I assume these missing steps are common knowledge to those who understand the internal workings of MJ but please share with other inexperienced and frustrated MJ users who have the same problem concerning the 4 ring voice mail limit. A logic assumption but first you need to be able to recieve calls before this would work.

You don't make changes to a file. deleting the big.skn file changes the softphone look so that you can see addional features. Then you just make your changes on the softphone itself.
The easiest way to get to the directory where you find the mj folder (mjusbsp) is to Click on Start -> Run then type "%appdata%" without the quotes and click ok.

Disabling Voicemail

I'm in the same boat Popgory was in, my wife is ready to kill me for switching to this Magicjack, and the voicemail issue is helping matters! If there are any other tips for disabling the voicemail I'd sure appreciate getting them.

I'm running Vista, and I'm running the Upgrade, because that was recommended for Vista. I've done all the registry changes, but MJ voicemail still picks up on the 4th ring. I've noticed that the values in the keys CFBusyTarget = MJ Phone #
CFNoAnswerTarget = MJ Phone #
do not retain my phone number after I put them in, when I reopen regedit (no regedit32 in Vista) my phone number will be gone from either CFBusyTarget or CFNoAnswerTarget. I've been putting the number in as a 10 digit string, no spaces or dashes, and no "1" prefix.

And I've never gotten the MJ skin to disappear either, deleting the big.skn/small.skn files makes no change. I'm not able to start the MJ without the skin so I've never gotten access to the "transfer" option.

Is the answer to do this under XP instead of Vista? I don't want to buy another XP license for this computer, since it came with Vista Business. If Vista is causing my grief then shame on me, again!

For what ever reasons I can't get the skin removed in order to make the necessary changes to stop the MJ voice mail. I had a tech friend to try also and he came up with the same results,,, both on a windows XP laptop and a Hp710 thin film with XPe. Maybe its possible to remove the skin to reveal the extra settings on some MJ configurations but not all of them. Hopefully some one will find a way that works for every Mj configuration. (I am beginning to think MJ has updated the MJ to prevent vm changes??

I purchased my MJ in January 09 and it works great with a thin film. Dam, I sure wish the MJ people would change the VM ringer to 5. That would make for some very happy customers...

Again, thanks guys for your contributions to this forum... Too bad the MJ engineers and owner don't read this forum..lol

Not working on Vista 64...

Folks,

I've tried this both ways - By removing the fancy skin to get at the Transfer button, and by editing the registry. Here is what happens: I call my MJ number from my cell. My handset rings 4 times. I hear it ringing likewise on the cell. My answering machine picks up on the 4th ring (I hear my outgoing message)... and on the cell, the MJ VM answers. Wow.

For the person who asked about removing big.skn and small.skn, I found that you need to use the Menu>>Advanced Users>>Restart option to to get the soft phone to come up without a "skin". Also, at least on Vista, you may have trouble deleting the skin that's in use. But you can RENAME it instead. Then you reset MJ from the menu, and you'll see the skinless app.

If anyone has any ideas about my VM issue on Vista 64 ... I'd love it. Thanks.

Make sure you've killed the MJ process(es) before entering the
changes through RegEdit.
Also Make sure the AutoIgnoreCalls = 0 (and AutoIgnoreTimeout is blank).
AutoIgnore is not compatible with this procedure.
Oh, also, just because it seems to work inconsistently and *may* be
causing problems, (I forgot to mention to) disable the call-forwarding
in the "My magicJack" and remove any forwarding number there, too.

Hope this helps. If you follow all the Registry changes in my previous
post, and make sure of these points, too, it should work regardless
of OS and version of your MJ dongle...(famous last words :P ).

Thank you, Joe, that's nice of you.
As a matter of fact, I've been up for about 40 hours straight working on
it. For a while last night, I thought that MJ had made a change to
keep these fixes from working, but then I realized I was testing with my
GV number (forwards to my MJ), and not my actual MJ #. I guess
it was getting a little too late...but I'm still up!
It's was a bit tough getting the timing on the rings correct, and it may not
be perfect for all rigs out there, but the ring duration controls are working
pretty well now, and it seems to consistently delete the extra call log records.

After I get some sleep, I need to complete some changes to the
"infrastructure" that I had started earlier, and then I'll be putting out the
new version by week's end.

Disabling VoiceMail / Answering machine pickup

Posted: Tue Aug 04, 2009 11:13 am
by Eponymous
Hey all,
So I followed all directions in this thread, and none seemed to work for me. Deleting the skins did not bring up the basic interface, setting all the registry entries, no help. Actually made it worse at times where it would ring on the calling end forever, answering machine would pickup, but not connect to the incoming call, and the incoming caller would hear a forever ring, all while the call log was filling up with repeats of the same number.

I think some of us have issues cause we have newer versions of the MagicJack Dongle, or later software revision. I have the latest, as I update regularly, and here's how I solved this. Can someone else verify that this works?

This is assuming I am currently using the big skin, otherwise change the skin in the magicjack app, or just make the changes on small.skn. Also, %userprofile% is the path to your user profile, ie.. c:\Documents and settings\John\
If you type %userprofile% into the location however, it will input the proper userprofile path.

-----With MagicJack Running------
Renamed: %userprofile%\Application Data\mjusbsp\big.skn to big.skn.old
From MagicJack: Menu->Advanced Users->Restart
Transfer Button: On no Answer for 20 sec. <Your MagicJack#> in Number Window.
( <Your MagicJack#> is your 7 digit MagicJack phone# as in 1234567890 )
Set Answer machine to 6 rings.
Renamed: Renamed: %userprofile%\Application Data\mjusbsp\big.skn.old to big.skn
From MagicJack: Exit
Relaunch from %userprofile%\Application Data\mjusbsp\MagicJackLoader.exe

Now all should be good. If you want to change the number of rings for pickup, play around with the "20 sec." part to satisfy your needs.

Let me know if this works for those with newer magicjacks out there.

Is there anyone on this thread who, like zbysior, "did as instructed" but still
couldn't get it to work, and *also* wants to beta test my app (MagicBeansĀ®)?

The reason I ask is I would like to determine if there actually *is* some
difference in their version of MJ or not. I have some doubts, but I also
need to determine if indeed, I'm wrong, and there is some "other configuration." :)
It would be good to have such a person test MB. If it works for them, then
the edits were not explained right, or not followed correctly. If it doesn't
work for them, then I have some work to do figuring what the problem is...

Anyone who thinks they followed the Registry change instructions (but it
didn't work) want to help? You're welcome to test this if you so choose.

PM me, and I'll send you my number to discuss it.

Disable Voice Mail and Much More

Posted: Wed Aug 12, 2009 11:13 pm
by pamatthew99
Having followed the instructions to disable the voice mail I have to say that I have done so much more and am so happy.

When I got into the transfer section I decided to check the unconditional button and raise the seconds to 300. The effect it had was marvelous for me as I really don't want to receive calls on my Magic Jack but want to place calls.

I have had a couple of different numbers on the same MJ device. The problem has been even after changing the number the old number continues to forward to the new number and revealing that new number to people who I would prefer not to have the number. Of course MJ support could not shut off the number just as they can't do anything. Anyhow my anger has me sidetracked.

The effect of what I have done has made my change on their server. When anyone calls my number (either of them) they now get a recording saying the number is not in service. This happens if I am plugged in or unplugged from my computer. Now I can make outbound calls and if I want someone to be able to call me back I forward to my cell phone. If I don't use the forward they get the out of service message. This is just great. Magic Jack insists these things can't be done but it's already in the software. If they would turn this stuff on they would certainly get rid of alot of customer complaints.

Tried CallForwardingEnabled 4 (decimal), but it still goes to voicemail ? Confirmed the registry value was present after a restart. Am I not understanding something? No need to bother with the skins if a registry update will do the same thing.

A setting on the call transfer option I'm trying is check on no answer for 8 seconds. I'm forwarding to one of my GV numbers that only rings back to my MJ line. This gives me four rings but it gives me the GV call answering options on the third and fourth ring. When I call my number I hear six rings but then Google's voicemail picks up instead of MJ's. Being that the caller id shows up right at the second ring this is a nice feature. The caller will hear six rings before GV's voicemail picks up. The MJ line hears four rings. This way your phone does not have to ring a ton of times if you don't want it to and you can use GV's voicemail as your home voicemail instead of relying on MJ's.

Posted: Mon Aug 17, 2009 2:31 pm
by sabresfan
A note to my last post doing this also gives me only one number showing up on my caller id screen. Also by setting the on no answer for to 10 sec and putting in your MJ number to transfer to on top I don't have any problems with my answering machine picking up on 5 rings. When it was set to 20 sec my answering machine would have trouble picking up after four rings.

I've also posted this question here.

I've got the MJ running as a service on win7, plus I've gone through the steps in this thread to "disable" voicemail. It is very stable and works great, except that the voicemail always picks up after the four rings.

If I run the MJ normally (not as a service), voicemail never picks up. Any ideas what may be going on here?

Thanks

After some messing around I finally got the skinless mode to work.
The trick I found was to have the window open that contains the big.skn and small.skn. Then do an advanced users>restart. WHILE IT IS RESTARTING CLICK BACK AND DELETE THE TWO .SKN files. MJ will come up skinless and you can change the options.

There's no way to increase the number of rings and continue to use MJ's voicemail. The only options I have found are to use an answering machine or transfer to a google voice number after 20 seconds and get 8 rings before google's voicemail kicks in. This is assuming that you have a google voice number that rings your MJ line.

Thanks for the response. I do have a GV number so I will try that. Just seems odd as I would think since my GV rings my MJ number, transferring my MJ back to GV it would create a loop? I guess not. Thanks again for the information!

Call forward will not ring your MJ line only the number you forward it to like a cell phone. Call transfer at 20 seconds allows your MJ line to ring 4 times then transfer to another number. The reason you get 8 rings when you transfer to your google voice number is that google voice is set at 4 rings then their voicemail starts. You set up your google voice number to ring your MJ number.

MagicBeans lets you set rings to 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12 or 15 rings before
sending to Vmail (or infinite rings)

It does a lot more, too.... :)

I only wish this would work with my computer off, as people can still leave voice mail, however it does work with pc on and modem. I also downloaded another program and I set the rings to 3, after that you hear nothing because the voice mail is turned off. I tested with my cell phone and placed calls to myself. LOL..I heard nothing on the other end and nothing was recorded. Is a nice feature.

This is really an outdated solution to disable voice mail but I understand you not wanting to spend more money.

The trick to making this work is to not unplug MJ before or after deleting the skin file. Also depending on which skin its using determines which one to delete. For example: with MJ running look at the softphone and see which skin its on, big or small. Delete the one not being used. Then restart MJ Menu->Advanced users->Restart. Once you make your changes do not uplug MJ, just restart it using the icon on the desktop.

Another option is to download stroth's utility manager. You can stop and start MJ without unplugging. With MJ stopped just delete both the big and small skins and then restart using the utility manager. When MJ starts backup you will see all the things you will need to disable voicemail with the instructions joe has given. When finished with the instructions stop MJ again with the utility manager and go into recycling bin on your computer and restore the big and small skins and MJ will look like normal again. You will have to repeat this everytime you unplug your MJ because it goes back to it's default settings.

This won't work anymore doing it from the softphone. I can't tell you the other method of doing it (never tried it) but if you purchase Magicbeans you can disable voicemail and have other options as well. This just started happening in the past week as MJ put out another update killing the ability disable voicemail and transfer calls from the softphone.

I cant understand why MJ doesnt want the end user the abiltiy, to have simple control of there voice mail, either to turn off or determine when the voice mail engages. To force us to goto thrid party software to get what they should be providing is silly. If you ask me I think everyone who wants the voicemail disabled to email there customer suporrt and demand it politelly (on a daily basis) The more that do maybe change will come.

"C:\Documents and Settings\login-name\Application Data\mjusbsp\magicJackLoader.exe"
Vdot's registry instructions still work to disable voicemail. Just remember to add dashes to your phone number when entering them into the registry

Set CFBusyTarget = MJ Phone # (like this ###-###-####)
Set CFNoAnswerTarget = MJ Phone # (like this ###-###-####)

Also, one hitch with this hack that I've noticed. If I pick up the phone when the MJ gets to the fourth ring and is in process of forwarding to itself (I hear a sort of double ring here), I lose the caller. However, if I wait until after the fifth ring I'm good to go (as long as I get it before google voice voicemail picks up). Perhaps changing CFNoAnswerTimeout value might have an effect...

Thanks to Vdot for this tip!!

Run the Registry Editor (regedt32.exe), and Navigate to this hive entry:
My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\talk4free\USB Softphone\Options\Calling Options

Set CallForwardingEnabled = 6 (ie: 2 (Busy) + 4 (No Answer)) (OverRides CFUnconditional (ie: 1))
Set CFBusyTarget = MJ Phone #
Set CFNoAnswerTarget = MJ Phone #
Set CFNoAnswerTimeout = 15 (Every 5 [Seconds] = 1 Phone Ring; LEAVE IT at 15)

Make Sure:
AutoIgnoreCalls = 0 and/or AutoIgnoreTimeout (up to 16 only) > CFNoAnswerTimout

NOTE: Similar settings would apply to ATAs, too.

Run taskmgr.exe (you can leave regedt32.exe open), and Kill any/all of these process(es):
magicJack.exe (should be the only one running)
mjsetup.exe
MagicJackLoader.exe
MagicJackSplash.exe

Run (or make a shortcut of & double-click):
"C:\Documents and Settings\login-name\Application Data\mjusbsp\magicJackLoader.exe"

If you pickup and hear the double ring just hit the talk button again and the phone will pickup like normal.

Hi all, I just got a MJ and I've tried the registry fixes in this thread to tweak the MJ voicemail, but to no avail. I even tried the skin maneuver, but that simply causes the MJ app not to appear at all after restarting. I'm thinking perhaps these registry hacks don't work with the current generation of MJ...does anyone have any suggestions? I tried the MagicRingForever app and that seemed to work, but I figured I'd ask here first before I fork over $10 when the trial period ends.
