Here's some new information that will help Windows 7 and maybe Vista users as well. To give proper credit I obtained this information from here and have tested it to work under Windows 7 starter

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r247087 ... t-think-so

The following command shows MJ has a request to prevent display and system power savings. If you get an error, you need to run the command prompt as an Administrator:

Code: Select all

C:\>powercfg /requests
DISPLAY:
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe

SYSTEM:
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe

AWAYMODE:
None.
The following commands will override (disable) the power request:

Code: Select all

powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS magicJack.exe DISPLAY
powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe DISPLAY
Notice one command has the full path as it appeared in the requests output. Be sure to use the path from your requests output. You need both or the power savings won't work.

This patch will survive reboots. You can check by running the command before and after a reboot

Code: Select all

powercfg /requestsoverride
Hope this update helps everyone!!

Those commands worked for Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit, thanks. I think I'm still going to get an Ooma, considering all the arbitrary changes MJ will undoubtedly continue to impose on us.

Luckily, I have survived the MJ upgrade relatively unscathed. It's still purring along. The only MJ problem I have is that it won't let me install it on my other PC's. That's okay for now, because it works well on its current PC.

Ooma is good. There's also www.nettalk.com. Of course, there are many other choices of VOIP service, but these three represent the lowest prices on the market (afaik):

-MJ
-NetTalk
-Ooma
Enjoys a daily VOIP cocktail made from:

-One shot Magic Jack
-One shot TK6000
-One shot NetTalk Duo
-Two shots Ooma (it's bigger)

Shaken, not stirred.

Google Voice is the chaser.

Magic Jack stops Windows Screensaver from working

Post by JCHolcomb »

The code passed on by Satoru works great on my Windows 7 64 bit system as well. Thanks so much!

The fact that such a relatively simple pair of commands can override the MagicJack update indicates they could have easily made this an option, so users who know the difference between putting the monititor into a power saving mode and putting the whole system to sleep can choose what they want to do. This update effectively eliminates the benefits of having an energy saving monitor, and may even shorten the life of the monitor. I know my monitor generates a fair amount of heat when it is on, but cools right down in power saving mode. Simply turning the monitor off when not in use may be an option for some, but I suspect a lot of people like me get up from the computer, not knowing for sure when we will get back to working on what we were doing. Turning the monitor off and back on too frequently will also shorten the life. Also, being a photographer, I calibrate my monitors, and even LCD monitors need a warm-up period to display colors accurately. An automatic system to shut the monitor off after an hour or so is the best solution for me.

Hopefully, MagicJack will listen to their customers, and at least make this power management "feature" an option in a future update. If not, I will be looking for a different VOIP provider.

Satoru's command line did the trick for me as well! Many thanks, satoru!

Not knowing much about computers, I could not even see how or where to enter a 'command' using Win7 - unlike WinXP. Did a Help search and found how to get a command line. Then I was puzzled as how to get two separate lines as a command before it executed the first line. So just did them one at a time and did not count on the code working - but, it did!

For those of who do not know,as I didn't,just because you are set as administrator does not mean you have administrator privileges in the command prompt. So for those who get the you don't have privileges error here is what you do.
1:Go to Start(Windows icon)
2:Type CMD in the box
3:under programs, right click on CMD and run as administrator.

Now you should be able to get your request in in order to get your second command.

WINDOWS 7 FIX for Screensaver not working.

Post by bailsmb »

I have searched several forums. The link below will take you to the answer. It is from a user named amigo_boy. It can take some time depending on how well you are with computers. The main thing is, my screen saver came on and then a minute later, my monitor automatically turned off like it was supposed to. YEA!!!

James: hello

James: i am having a problem after the newest upgrade to my magicjack

Bridgette: May I know the exact nature of your problem with full details please?

James: my screensaver will not come on

James: i have researched this problem on the internet and it seems to be pretty typical after the new upgrade

Bridgette: May I please have your magicJack phone number?

James: xxxxxxxxxx

Bridgette: Thanks for the information.

Bridgette: But if you unplug the device, will your screen saver work?

James: yes

Bridgette: Okay.

Bridgette: With our new upgrade, magicjack was designed to stay active all the time and will prevent your computer from going to sleep state.

James: the screensaver is not sleep

Bridgette: Yes, due to the new upgrades, the screen saver or sleep mode if magicJack is plugged in will not function.

James: so why did it work fine before the upgrade? i fail to see why this is needed

Bridgette: I know this can be frustrating and I would have accommodated your request if it were possible. But we have already reported this concern since a lot of Customers don't want this James. Rest assured that we are working on it.

James: ok. thanks. is there an estimated time frame for another upgrade?

Bridgette: We do not have a date yet James. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

So, for now I need to do something else. I tried the solution satoru posted, but it didn't work for me. I'm pretty sure I did it correctly. I will have to try what balismb posted and get back. I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise.

At least they claim to be fixing it.

Magic Jack stops Windows Screensaver from working

Post by adavis »

Well, add me to the list. I spent about 2 hours getting through to MagicJack's chat support, and my results were nearly identical to everyone else's here. The tech support people have no clue. :(

Our family has TWO MagicJack's and we recommend MagicJack to other people. If they don't fix this, the Two MagicJack's go in the trash, and I will tell everyone not to ever use MagicJack. What a shame that all this is caused by a programmer not thoroughly testing software before releasing it.

The best temporary workaround is one another user posted about the "Monitor Off Utility." However, the only problem is that if I use my MagicJack, the monitor comes back on, and doesn't turn itself off again as it would normally after the set time. Nonetheless, I appreciate the tip and it helps a bit.
http://www.dekisoft.com/mou.php

I do hope MagicJack reads this and will put out a fix soon. If they don't, I think MagicJack won't be around much longer. Not a good thing, in this bad economy!

------------
UPDATE: satoru's fix posted earlier worked for me on Windows 7 64 bit. Thanks satoru!

Windows 7 64-bit, screensaver and power options won't work at all. They better fix this crap soon, I'm sick of manually clicking a shortcut to my screensaver every time I'm done using my PC for a while.

Try this. I have Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. My power options are working perfectly now. You do it once, you don't ever have to do it again. Even if you turn off or restart your computer.

Be sure to run the Command Prompt as administrator, otherwise you won't be able to make changes. Also, use the string that shows up when you type in "powercfg /requests" in your "requestsoverride" command.

On a side note, I bought and am using the Ooma system now. Wow, that is a neat system. The little box acts as an answering machine, with play, rewind, and fast forward buttons. It doesn't forward your voicemails by e-mail though (that is a premium feature). MJ has lost this customer. I'm keeping MJ until my subscription expires in January.

Screen Saver doesn't work anymore

Post by christietino »

I spoke to Tech Support at Magic Jack today online. Here was their answer when I asked why my screen saver no longer worked:

"Ideally, the power saving options of your system should be disabled when the device is plugged in. We have purposely designed our updated software that way because when a system goes into power save, most likely its USB ports and internet capabilities are limited which is a requirement for our device to function correctly.

There have been instances wherein customers missed important calls thinking the device is enabled while on power save. We want to prevent that from happening to you, which is why we disabled the power saving options of the system while the device is plugged in. If the device is unplugged, your power options will kick back in. Of course any calls that comes while the device is unplugged will go to your voicemail or to the number you have set up to forward it to."

Yes, but what the MagicJack programmers should know, as most computer users know, is that simply having the screensaver come on, or the monitor in power saver mode, does not put the whole system to sleep. It still leaves the USB ports and internet connection active, and MagicJack works fine. If they want to disable sleep mode or hibernation, that's OK, but they shouldn't hijack the computer so you can't even run a screensaver automatically. MagicJack has always made it clear that their device doesn't work when the computer is turned off. Just because a few less well informed users don't understand that sleep mode is basically the same as turning off the computer, doesn't mean the rest of the computer user world should suffer a loss of an important feature. They should have spent just a little extra effort to program this update to at least give us the option of turning the disabling code off. The way they did it shows very little regard for their base of existing customers. If they don't recognize this, and issue a correcting update soon, I will be switching to NetTalk when my current subscription runs out. I will do this, even though the Dos-code patch in earlier posts has solved the problem for now.

---------------
powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS magicJack.exe DISPLAY
powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS ^
\Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roamin\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe ^
DISPLAY

"Roamin" should be "Roaming".

The following command shows MJ has a request to prevent display and system power savings. If you get an error, you need to run the command prompt as an Administrator:

Code: Select all

C:\>powercfg /requests
DISPLAY:
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe

SYSTEM:
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe

AWAYMODE:
None.
The following commands will override (disable) the power request:

Code: Select all

powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS magicJack.exe DISPLAY
powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe DISPLAY
Notice one command has the full path as it appeared in the requests output. Be sure to use the path from your requests output. You need both or the power savings won't work.

This patch will survive reboots. You can check by running the command before and after a reboot

Code: Select all

powercfg /requestsoverride
Hope this update helps everyone!!
This worked well with my Win 7 64 bit. However, I used the following slightly different command to overwrite both the DISPLAY and SYSTEM (notice the additional "SYSTEM" at the end of both commands)

Code: Select all

powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS magicJack.exe DISPLAY SYSTEM
powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe DISPLAY SYSTEM
Thanks for posting the solution!

Magic Jack stops Windows Screensaver from working

Post by ccchen »

I have a 32-bit vista home premium. The latest update broke my monitor power saving mode. I just complained on their live chat. Hopefully, we'll gather strength in numbers.

Prior to the upgrade, my screen saver doesn't always work. I found that if I click the "red" button or leave the cursor in the "editable text field(for calling)" as the last thing before leaving the keyboard, chances are that the screen savor will kick in. With the new upgrade, the screen saver seems to be fine so far. It just broke the monitor power saving mode.

Just wanted to share my 2-cents. Thx.

Since the uupgrade, my monitor will not sleep, but will run till I physically turn it off. This sucks! I spent 30 minuites in chat only to have them basically tell me "We are aware of the problem and aint gonna fix it" . Run your hardware until in breaks.

Thanks for posting the solution!
I think the SYSTEM is probably redundant. The DISPLAY/SYSTEM is to indicate what kinds of power request types are overridden. DISPLAY relates to screen savers and monitor turnoff, SYSTEM are more for hibernation and standby, and AWAYMODE which is a mode that HTPC uses to 'appear' off but actually still be on so it's not something most people would use.

If you disable on the SYSTEM part, I suspect you won't be able to automatically enable standby/shutdown while MagicJack is running. Again this might not be a huge issue since theoretically, if you're running magicjack you probably dont want the computer to standby/hibernate automatically anyways.

It might disable things like 'standby when closing lid' though. So I guess if you left the dongle plugged in, closed the lid, then went somewhere, you might have a problem. Admittedly it's an esoteric one, but something to be mindful of.

Thanks to satoru I have my sanity back. I never suspected MagicJack. I tried everything else when my monitor power saver just stopped working. I uninstalled programs, rolled back the system (but got the magicJack upgrade when logged back in). Then I luckily found this thread, ran the override commands and all is well.
I live overseas and depend on magicJack to communicate with my kids and grandkids in the states.
I hope magicJack takes this all to heart, but in the meantime, the fix works and I still love my magicJack!
BTW - I have a desktop system running Windows 7 32bit

Anyone have a fix for XP SP3?? I can get around the screen saver problem by changing the setting to never and then back to 5 min. BUT sometimes I forget. So is there anyway to do for XP SP3 as for Win 7??

Thanks

I'm with you on that. I'm tired of messing with their Live chat. They put out a BAD upgrade, and will not acknowledge it, and my MJ doesn't work period - no dial tone; can't make or receive calls audibly. I click a number, dial tone goes silent. I can talk to no one. This started after their last update. I'm still waiting for an "email" solution from their Engineers. Still no email. Time to go back and reactivate my cell phone service.

I don't have XP handy right now but I can try to recommend a few things that might work. Which ever method works, you will need to then schedule that in that Task Scheduler to run every hour, or you can put it into your startup and put in a 5-10 minute delay so that MagicJack runs first, then your script runs.

powercfg /query
<take note whats in the "Name" field>
powercfg /change "<Name field>" /monitor-timeout-dc 15
powercfg /change "<Name field>" /monitor-timeout-dc 0

You can change the 0 to whatever the "Turn off monitor (DC)" field was originally. Hopefully this will 'blip' the settings

If not then it's probably editing your registry. You'll need to take a look then in HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaverTimeout. See if setting that to 0 then to the original value fixes the problem. Then you can create a script to import a .reg file based on that key

If I have some time later today I'll muck around with my MagicJack on an old XP laptop and see what can be done.

Another method might be to set up a local group policy for the display timeout settings and such. Those setting 'usually' can't be adjusted by the user, so Magic Jack wouldn't be able to hijack them theoretically. I'll try that method out as well when I have a chance

Thank you very much. I mean sure I do not have the problems Win 7 users had as I can get my monitor to power down in 5 min, but unless I remember to do it manually every time it doesnt.

Thanks again for your help.

Windows Vista Fix

Post by show.stopper »

I did the following to fix the issue in Vista. I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit.

Go to the CMD prompt and type the following:

powercfg -devicequery all_devices

(Now look for the MagicJack device, it was listed as "PHONE" on mine. You can always unplug the MagicJack and run the command above again to see if the device in question disappears.) Next type (replacing "PHONE" with the name your computer lists):

powercfg -devicedisablewake PHONE

That should fix it. Rember to be logged in as an administrator. It came back to state the following, "You do not have permission to enable or disable device wake." However, it is working on my PC now. Hope this helps!

Here's the commands for powercfg under XP. Perhaps you or someone can come up with commands needed under XP.

http://ss64.com/nt/powercfg-xp.html

I'm no expert, but I would think this command would tell you the device name of magicJack running.

powercfg /devicequery wake_programmable
if not try
powercfg /devicequery wake_armed

If you see the magicJack device you could try this to disable it from waking the computer:

powercfg /deviceDisableWake devicename

When I do that the only thing I see which references my MJ is :
Ymax MagicJack USB Device (003) and again with (007)
But somehow I doubt that is what I need to use. right?

Comes back both times with NONE.

Joe,

You could still try the commands:

powercfg /deviceDisableWake Ymax MagicJack USB Device (003)
and
powercfg /deviceDisableWake Ymax MagicJack USB Device (007)

I find it weird your computer comes back with NONE when you do:
powercfg /devicequery wake_programmable
or
powercfg /devicequery wake_armed

Mine at least lists a few things. Like my Network adapter for instance. I'm doing these commands on my netbook which is running XP SP3. It's the only computer I have running XP.

Hopefully we'll get this figured out for you. Or maybe magiJack will.

HA MagicJack, good one :)
Just tried those 2 commands and and same thing returned, NONE ( in Capitals)

I appreciate the help, but I guess not a big deal to cyle the monitor setting on and off. IF I remember that is :)

satoru wrote:Here's some new information that will help Windows 7 and maybe Vista users as well. To give proper credit I obtained this information from here and have tested it to work under Windows 7 starter

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r247087 ... t-think-so

The following command shows MJ has a request to prevent display and system power savings. If you get an error, you need to run the command prompt as an Administrator:

Code: Select all

C:\>powercfg /requests
DISPLAY:
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe

SYSTEM:
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe

AWAYMODE:
None.
The following commands will override (disable) the power request:

Code: Select all

powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS magicJack.exe DISPLAY
powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe DISPLAY
Notice one command has the full path as it appeared in the requests output. Be sure to use the path from your requests output. You need both or the power savings won't work.

This patch will survive reboots. You can check by running the command before and after a reboot

Code: Select all

powercfg /requestsoverride
Hope this update helps everyone!!

Doesn't work for me

Post by nailgunner »

I'm using windows 7 on a new machine. I have checked and rechecked everything. My overrides are showing after the "powercfg /requestsoverride" command. Still no screensaver, until I UNPLUG MY DOGGONE MAGICJACK. Not a huge issue since it's on a desktop, but like everyone else, the whole thing is really starting to wear thin with me.

the command i used was this - maybe your's will be similar - you need to use the quotes or you will get an error because of the spaces

Code: Select all

powercfg -devicedisablewake "USB Internet Phone by TigerJet"

Thanks for the suggestion. That was the only way it would work for me too when I tried earlier. I received the message that "you don't have permission to enable or disable wake device" as was mentioned in his fix. (Yes, I ran as administrator). And when I ran "powercfg devicequery wake_armed" as mentioned by areamike the MJ isn't listed. But, I tried it all again with the exact same results. Go figure. I've run so many command lines, if they do put a fix though, I think my computer will spit it back.
