You are right. I tried it, got a "Lucky You" upgrade. I ended up un-installing it. Didn't see any change in the MJ screen. And there was no way to get a MagicTalk number.

Assume that is because MJ is already on my computer. Assume things would be different for non-MJ users. They probably get the infamous MagicTalk screen and other options.

I downloaded and installed without the dongle and it opened up the MagicTalk softphone.

There's a brief registration process but when I plugged in my USB headset, I wasn't able to change the speakers from the computer to the earphones.

Lately, I've been getting complaints again about the severe echo with my regular MJ, so I doubt if MagicTalk will be a Skype killer.

Correction to my previous post. I closed and re-opened MT and was able to adjust the settings for the headset. I made a test call to a number with a recorded message and the quality of the recording was fine, but I still don't know about the echo.

I suppose it might have a use, but I have my doubts.

Someone over on DSLreports posted the following statement which as of now is still on nettalk.com :

Late Wednesday afternoon, without announcing that we were going to ask for Beta customers for magicTalk, we quickly received over 10,000 volunteers by "word of mouth" and shut down the trial for others by the next morning.

We received very few requests for customer service and the average download time took less than 30 seconds. Many Beta users were making calls within 20 seconds of starting the download. We now know that we have tackled the hard part, namely ease of use and reliability.

The BETA customers were instructed to use headphones, and I think most people were amazed by the excellent voice quality. We are using an uncompressed HD voice codec when calling amongst each other and magicJack users. We use narrowband g711, an uncompressed codec to call people on the PSTN.

We encountered a few bugs and realized that we should change a few things such as providing visible volume controls. Our database performed flawlessly and can manage the large quantities of customers. All calls went off without a hitch.

I believe once we get out of BETA, we have quite a winner on our hands, for customers throughout the world. I look forward to the full release and the anticipated millions of users.

The software will still work on computers authorized for use of the software before the cutoff time.

New installs now ask for the MagicJack device in order for the software to run. The App was moved for Iphone use. That's simply another device to keep track of. While it is handy for those who only want to do computing on their Iphone, the rest of us are left out of the circle.

I hope this is a sales push drive only, not a replacement for the convenient software. I paid for the software's phone number as well a year of landline serviceability.

I do not want to purchase nor keep track of a second device, just only to simply access and use the convenient service on my netbook computer. I'm planning to put out a petition for it.

Since no-one is willing to give a copy of the necessary registry keys to allow MagicTalk access without the "plug in your MagicJack" screen stopping progress...

I'm shopping on eBay for a used Magicjack, but the resale value of this thing is way too high. None of them go for less than $20, unactivated.

Maybe one day MagicJack will have this external-device-free to use the
computer's speaker and microphone IS an option to use in MagicJack, as part of the Headset subsystem.

The major problem with MagicTalk is that it was using the SAME interfacing software as MagicJack, which cause serious conflicts. The interface should be modified so that it works independently of MagicJack, but checks to see if MJ is running, and disables/hides itself if it is. MagicTalk would log in through a separate site that verifies the machine authorizations against is database. One account cannot be used on a second computer until a few minutes after the previous computer has disconnected. Talk4free numbers can also be fixed to a particular computer utilizing a "computer parts anchoring" method that uses a program to read the serial numbers of the video card, the motherboard, the hard drive and the system install date/ID. That way, oversharing would not take place.
