I can hear them but I am broken and statiky to them

Post by davidwpenny »

I just got my mj yesterday and I am already frustrated. I was online with three different spt people for over two hours today and had to cut the last one off because I had to go to work.

They had me make all sorts of changes to my computer settings, none which made things work any better (or worse). Uninstalled and installed the software three times and an update twice (same ones).

First, I am using a ActionTec M1000 (which I am told by mj spt is a router and not a modem---you will find I am not a technician). My DSL provider is Qwest who also provided the M1000. My computer is only a few months old and was put together by a friend who got the parts for me from "Egghead". If you need to know anymore only the computer, let me know and I'll see what I can find out. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate and have the "update" feature with MS on so I get updates every night and they install (if any).

I got mj and also got a phone number although I am not sure if I will ever use it. The purpose was to get cheaper ld since my parents are now in an assisted living home and I talk to them almost daily (80 miles away so long distance).

What is happening--- I dial a number and the person answers. I can hear them as if they are standing right next to me---real clear. They hear me with a bunch of static and dropping every other word or syllable so my conversation makes no sense. THIS IS THE MAJOR THING.

Secondary (and I haven't even tried to approach it yet because I will not be giving out the number at this time for people to call, so I don't care if it works---RIGHT NOW but maybe later), I had one of them try to call me back using the number on the caller ID---I didn't know they were going to do this---the phone rang but when I picked it up, it was dead---no dial tone, no nothing.

Any ideas on why the static and breaking up and how (or if) it can be fixed?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Bring up Task Manager (Ctl-Alt-Del) and click on the performance tab. See if when you are talking if the processor usage goes to 100%. If that is the case then that is the reason for the breakup in your voice. You will have to look (or have your friend) look at shutting down or limiting other processes that are running on your computer. Task Manager can also show what processes are running and how much processor each one is using.

Tried it. Processor never went over 27% and I was still broken up on their end.

Then I would check out bandwidth, latency and jitter at some place like here -

http://www.whichvoip.com/voip/speed_test/ppspeed.html

Your Internet provider will make the difference here. I assume you are not on satellite like Hughes. My MJ works fine and I have 1.5 ms jitter, no packet loss, a bandwidth of 8.26 Mbs and latency of 23 ms. Upload at the time only measured 1.06 which they say is not enough for good VoIP.Usually it is well above 2 Mbs.

FOUND THE PROBLEM (only I don't know why it was a problem). I had the mj using the extension cable they sent with it because I had it plugged into the back of my computer. For some reason, I removed the cable and plugged it into the same port in the back. IT WORKS!!! I then plugged the cable back into it and, sure enough, it stopped working again.

Now I just have to call them in the next couple days to figure out why when someone calls me, it will ring, but the line is dead when I pick it up. (tried it with and without the cable and it does the same thing).

Thanks for your help. I am keeping notes of what you said in case something happens in the future.
