Interesting Accidental Discovery

Post by jeridhill »

I am running a Mac at home and that is where I have MagicJack installed. I am on Leopard and I always go to iChat and do screen sharing so I can access my computer at home, (I control my computer at home as if it were here at the office).

My wife was using the MagicJack and I didn't realize it. So I initiated a screen sharing session and when I took control of the home computer, I could hear my wife talking to her mom. I couldn't hear her mom talking back, but I could hear her very loudly. That is strange since when I am connected to her computer any other time, any sounds her computer makes, I can't hear them on my side. Obviously it's not her computer making the noise, but it just took be off guard. I did notice her telling her mom that I connected and the voice quality got real bad, which is to be expected since I was sucking up the bandwidth.

Anyway, I thought it was interesting....

Perhaps they use the same ports? I noticed that my MJ uses the telnet port, which is also the same one used by my MS Office. It scared the crap out of me until I found out what was happening.
Windows Vista and Laptop with XP SP2 on the road. Occasionally, a Mac if my Windows machine isn't working.
