Looks like you had a fun day BTW once you get your Asterisk box up and running look into app_rpt it allows things like Ham radio to be tied to your Asterisk telephone system.

A bit off topic, but do you folks know of any device that I can phone into and it will pickup and either listen in on noises in the house when we're away, or in my case, for an elderly parent to begin a hands free conversation (say they are incapacitated and lying on the floor)? I would connect the device to an ATA with a VOIP sub-account that only rings that particular device.
I recall along time ago there used to be answering machines that would answer and it had a mic so you could listen in on the house, kind of a poor man's security system.
What else can you do with VOIP with respect to home security?

Yeah it's been a lil while for me and i understand what u want. You can use the phone like a baby monitor etc and more but i been out of the scene of doing that for awhile i can't remember all the details but i will say if there is a will there is a way. Someone may answer you with a more professional answer im sure. In order to do hands free it would have to be VOX ( Voice Activated Transmit ) If a handicap person could not speak then that option would be out as it would require a voice to work and when they stopped talking it would go into receive mode I.E. Voice activated Transmit

If there is a computer near where you want to talk/monitor you can load the x-lite softphone on it and select AA for auto answer. You can then call in and have two way conversation if you like. X-lite is kind enough to unmute the speakers on an incoming call also if they have been muted.
You'll just need to have a microphone and speakers on the computer.
You can sign up for a free DID at ipkall or one of the other providers and connect the softphone to it since you only need incoming calls.

Great idea! I have a voip.ms subscription and can set up a new sub-account for x-lite on a thin client. I have a thin client running MJ at my father's place. It's on all the time, it just needs a microphone and I have a spare USB audio card! This will be a good emergency tool if I don't receive his twice daily email "I'm OK".

Thanks for the idea!!!
Your welcome Tony!
I think from other posts that you have a HP 57XX Tc and they have speaker inside them. Not all that loud but if in the same room that should work; so all you need to do is add mike to the mike jack on the back.
You may also want to look into the X10 Personal Assistant. This provides a small heart shaped button they can wear. If they press the button the unit will dial up to 4 phone numbers and play a message you record. The receiving caller presses a 0 and they can listen in but will not be able to talk back to the person who pressed their alert button; so this feature has limited ability but is nice. That way if they have say fallen and can't get to a phone they can press the button so you know something is up and can then call them on the TC in addition to normal check up calls.
I gave my oldest sister one of these one of these and she kept it around her neck for years till she passed. It summoned me on two occasions when she needed help and could not get to a phone to dial. My other sister has that unit now and keeps it near her as well. Thank heaven she has not needed it yet. Yeah I am the baby of the family. There was a little thing called WWII between me and my older sisters
Alternatively you could use one of the X10 security systems since their little activate/deactivate keychain remotes also have a panic button and the security consoles also have the ability to dial up to 4 numbers as well; but the Personal Assistant heart is really small enough to wear around your neck.

Tony, you might also look at IP Cameras. They support two way voice and allow you to see there also (yes, privacy issues for the end being viewed). Much more expensive solution since it requires a broadband connection at the camera location.
