Can I put 2 MJ's on one computer in order to have 2 phone numbers/phone lines etc. ?
Basically I have a laptop running as my MJ service to my phone lines, and want to add a second line without having to add a second laptop ?
How can this be done and what experience does anyone have with this.
Please advise
What about 2 MJ's on one computer ?

MJ softphone does not support more than one MJ device per PC. Others have said that it could be done if you're running some sort of Virtual Machine (VM) software so that another instance of MJ softphone could be run in the VM mode. It's simpler to install MJ on a different PC if you have one handy

What about 2 MJ's on one computer ?
Thanks, for the reply,
I sort of suspected that, because many windows applications won't run multiple instances, Linux applications will do this, but MJ not yet working on linux as far as I know.
I guess I'll get another cheap laptop perhaps an inspiron 4000 old P3 or something for around $50-$100 on ebay.
Maybe less, but still cheap considering I have 1) vonage number and one virtual number for about $396 per year.
So I'll still save if MJ continues to work as it has in my testing over the last few days.
Has anyone had any problem running it on computers with low resources like older 486 running winxp ? or even P2's or P3's with only lets say 128MB ram.
And is it ok to hybernate ? or will this effect the MJ performance ?
Please advise thanks

I'm hoping that MJ will introduce BYOD (bring your own device) soon so that MJ service could be used with an unlocked ATA (analog telephone adaptor). ATA is cheap ($20-50), small & compact, runs 24/7 with little power requirement (compared to running a PC/laptop 24/7 or even a Thin Client PC). Dan, the MJ inventor, has said BYOD would be available in March 2008 and they would sell phone number (to be used with ATAs) for just $3/year.

Really ?
That sounds good, cause I did like the fact that my Vonage had the box and I put that on a separate gateway of it's own and not behind the server gateway.LikeMagic wrote:I'm hoping that MJ will introduce BYOD (bring your own device) soon so that MJ service could be used with an unlocked ATA (analog telephone adaptor). But I'm happy running it on an old laptop and just using the old laptop as the phone device.
I'm curious how MJ would run on an old 486 or even P1,P2 etc. because those are pretty darn cheap.
Also if they could make it work on linux then the linux people would easily create a live CD and you could run it without a hard drive, or perhaps even just run it on a flash drive at which point you would not use much power at all really since you would not have the CD or the hard drive running.
Or something like that.
Anyhow BYOD is a good idea too, I wish the magic jack itself was a stand alone device which had linux running inside of the hardware device itself, that way no need for windows and it's open source etc. and could be run on a limited amount of hardware. Seems simple in theory,
Anyhow I'm very happy so far.
I've been making calls and all are clear, I've had 2 people tell me the volume is a little low, but I'm going to look into what I can do to boost the volume a little. I would guess this could be something to do with the noise cancelling feature or some setting in windows perhaps.
I'm happy with MJ so far and really considering terminating my Vonage very soon, I like Vonage and I feel guilty cancelling the service hearing about the financial status and such. But I'm cheap and I'm trying to save money for some investments I want to make.
Happy phoning,
