MJ won't start with CD in tray

Post by Crunchie »

MJ is acting a little fragile lately on start-up. If there happens to be a CD in the tray, MJ won't start at all, no splash screen, nothing. If I notice that it's not there and try to start it manually (by reinserting the jack, or by running the startup program) it does odd things, like:
  • deactivating the jack ("bee-boop", just like I'd pulled it out manually)
opening an Explorer window of G: (blank)
displaying a popup box announcing that some program failed to start
starting the home page dog video
How can I encourage it to be more robust? Yeah, I know, take out the CD, but besides that... It was 24 hours before I noticed last week. The silence was nice, but some people were concerned that I didn't call back.

This was not an issue until a month or so ago. What changed, and how can I change it back?

Sounds like (for some reason) the CD is locking up autorun and now letting MJ fire up. More than likely, this is a PC/Windoze issue rather than MJ. Maybe this will help:

Sorry for the delay, but thanks, hsweiss, for your response. I tried the MS AutoPlay Repair Wizard, as you suggested. It all checks out for a while, shows the two MJ drives (defined as Removable Disk and CD Drive), but then says, "This type of drive does not support AutoPlay settings."

This didn't used to happen, not so long ago. In the most recent incident, a CD was left in the drive for several hours and the MJ drives were then spontaneously shut down, a couple minutes apart.

I don't think this is supposed to happen. Any other ideas?
