Info on a Thin Client

Post by Thurman »

I have been away from the scene for a while. I am thinking of completely ditching my landline. It has been something that we really don't use in the house. We all have cell phones. So I am going straight Magic Jack. Please don't bash me for newbie questions.

But I don't want my big Windows 7 machine going all the time. So is this thin client the best alternative? If so please point me in the right direction.

With your help I can be up and running with the same expertise as you? Share the Knowledge!!!!!!

Your best bet is to look on ebay and compare the prices. I wouldn't get anything less than a 512/512 and there seems to be a bunch of them. Check the reviews of the seller and hope for the best. Other than that you can pick up an old desktop of laptop for cheap usually off craigslist but if I was going to get one I would go the thin client route where it's already preconfigured and get one from a reputable seller from ebay. Also read the thin client forum here and you can get a good idea of what these are and what specs MJ needs to run smoothly theses days without much hassle. Good Luck

I agree with sabresfan. Ebay thin client prices have been dropping since the first of this year. A t5720 can be had for as little as $55 if you want to do the magicJack install yourself. There's an excellent sticky at the top of this section that describes in great detail how to do an install on a t5700. A MJ install on the t5720 is very similiar. If you had rather buy one pre-configured, I've seen them for as little as $75 for the t5720. Beware of any HP thin client under 1GHz though. There are SEVERAL 800MHz t5710s on ebay that are (IMHO) an under achiever when it comes to magicJack performance.

I've played around quite a bit with the three most discussed thin clients on this forum, those being the HP t5700, t5710 and t5720. Again, IMHO, the 1.2GHz t5710 is the best bang for your buck. As long as it has 512F/512R, it's plenty powerful enough to run your MJ along with third party software like MagicFeatures too. Mine has been rock steady now for almost a year needing only the occasional restart......most likely an artifact of Bill Gates and NOT magicJack.

Good Luck!!
