Computer Audio Bad Handset Fine

When I use magic jack from my telephone the sound is fine. When I do not plug in my handset and try to use my computer the audio is very hesitant and tough to hear. There has to be a conflict with another program but I can't figure out which one. I believe this because when I used system restore and set the restore point about 3 months ago the audio through my computer is fine with mj. Is there a common conflict that you are aware of. I do not run any other programs when I have done this.

Using the wrong audio device? I get this problem with Skype - it picks the SRS Premium sound and it sounds like crap. I switch it to IDT Audio and it sounds just fine.
