Just wanted to give you my input. I had a phillips headset, no caller ID problems whatsoever, switched to a Panasonic KX-TG8231CB and it didn't work.

I read lots and lots about resisters but didn't know where to start, in the end I bought a duplex from wal-mart for $6.00 and an old corded telephone from the thrift store for $3.99.

Well wouldn't you know it, CID works, not only for numbers but names as well, yep names. Not names I have stored in the memory, these are names coming through that have never been in the phone.

That's my input for you.

Thanks,

Note: if you perform this mod, don't forget to use electrical tape to cover the resistor's exposed wires to prevent short :)

Do you think that putting the resistor on just one side would be any different?

Re: Caller ID fix!! (Low/no tech)

CheleD wrote:After browsing around this forum, I came across the fix using the resistor. I then found a suggestion that was much more low tech--and it works! I plugged a 3-way coupler (Y adapter-1 in 2 outs) into the magic jack via a 5 1/4 in telephone line cord, then plugged another 5 1/4 in telephone line cord between my dial-up computer connection at the back of my computer and the magic jack. I then plugged in my phone into the other outlet of the 3-way and like magic...Caller ID on the phone!!!! I guess the computer gives it enough boost. Thanks to richardp53 and slicktop281 over at fixya for that solution. I wanted to post it here because I didn't see that option after all the time I spent on here today. I was prepared to try the resistor fix, though. So thanks!
This solution worked for me. Just wanted to thank everyone, OP, CheleD and posters where CheleD got it from.

100k resistor does not work for me :(

See the picture below. The 100k hack did not work for me. Any ideas?
Phone: Uniden EXI4246

I tried this:

>Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>Scroll to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and expand>Right click on each USB Root Hub and select Properties>Select Power Management tab>Make sure the to uncheck the box next to "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

And it didn't work right away. So I swapped out the 6ft phone cord (cord that goes from phone to MagicJack) with a heavier, higher quality cord and it worked. Of course I'll need to give it a few days to see if it actually fixed it.

EDIT: Nevermind, didnt fix it

Not sure why you have #1? My kids are on Webkinz on two computers at the same time (neither is the MJ host computer) and MJ works. Why would a website cause MJ call out to not work?

#2 AND #4 can be accomplished by installing MJ as a WINDOWS SERVICE. There are posts on this forum how to do this.
Alternatively, and simpler, you could go into the DISPLAY settings on your control panel and change the log off timeout to NEVER.

The MJ softphone only knows how to instruct the OS to send this information to the audio device associated with it ... it is possible that it sometimes ... "forgets" how to pause the talk path audio in order to allow the Caller ID information to flow to that same device, thus forcing that audio (Caller ID info) to flow out of the computer via a different audio device.
It appears I've found a solution to my caller id issue which appears related to Remote Desktop and probably has something to do with the issue mberlant posted about previously, as quoted. I don't think my findings will help many others, if any at all, but I figured I'd post what I did just in case. In short: If you use Remote Desktop to connect to a computer the MJ software runs on, set the sound to remain at the remote computer; don't bring it to the computer you're connecting from. More detail follows:

Caller ID was working fine for me, but I didn't want to run the buggy MJ software on my main computer anymore, so I bought a cheapo $100 computer to put in the back room. I didn't hook up a monitor, keyboard or mouse to it and figured I'd just use RDP (Remote Desktop) to access it.

One thing I noticed right off the bat - if I tried to restart MJ when connected to that computer via RDP it would complain that there were no audio drivers available. So I would just reboot the computer anytime I needed to restart MJ. I've been having problems with caller ID working sporadically, more often not, ever since I hooked it up to the new computer. Caller ID had been working fine when the MJ was hooked up to my main computer.

I won't go into the story regarding the long hours and MANY experiments I tried. But I'll be taking the DSL filter back to Radio Shack tomorrow, the powered USB hub was a waste of $10, and I ordered one of those magicmojita jobbies which I apparently won't need anymore. (It hasn't arrived yet.)

I finally figured out just a few hours ago that if I set the "Remote computer sound" of the RDP connection to "Leave at remote computer" the MJ software no longer complains when I restart it 'cuz it can't find a sound device. I have tried 30 test calls and they have all worked fine, whether I've connected to the computer via RDP or not (with the new settings). And this is even though I received no pop up error about the sound device from the MJ software (since I didn't restart the MJ software).

Like I said, I don't know how many people this issue might apply to, but it's something to keep in mind with all this mess.

I had the no CID issue weather I had one phone or many phones connected to it, so it seems that ringer EQ or resistance doesn't seem to be the issue. The run is short and twisted-pair, so capacitance doesn't seem to be the issue.
ANYONE:
Why does adding 100k Ohm of resistance fix the issue? Also, what is the ringer EQ if 100k or how many phones does this equate to on average?

The 100k Ohm resistor trick works gr8 !

Post by ThisIsMyUserName »

Just wanted to thank the super genius that came up with the 100k-ohm-resistor-across-the-phone-line-fix, it worked great and I now have caller ID back on my phones. The only thing is that it leaves me wondering why Dan's engineering department didn't incorporate this in the MJ and if future versions will fix the hardware bug. On a new subject, but while I was at RadioShack buying the resistors, I noticed that they dropped carrying MagicJack in exchange for Ooma. I never heard of this VoIP provider, but it seems pretty cool. No monthly/annual phone bill at all, just an initial upfront purchase. No need to keep the computer on too...just plug into the router, so no need for a ThinClient/ATA. Plus they have number porting as well, not something we have to wait "soon" for with a MJ. The info says that the device reserves the bandwith it needs on your ethernet, so the voice quality is supposed to be good even during heavy internet traffic times. Has anybody out there tried Ooma yet? I'll probably use both devices for a side-by-side comparison.

A lot of people like ooma and I have heard they are coming out with their ooma telo soon. This may make MJ up what they offer in terms of features. Maybe have some kind of a premiere plan with number porting and other features. The main concern I would have with ooma is their business model. They have survived on venture capitalists pumping money into them so far and have yet to turn a profit. The other thing I don't care for is that the ooma hub and scout can only be used for ooma. If either takes a dump your stuck buying a new one unless the place you buy it from will take it back and offer a refund or exchange. If you buy an ooma let us know about your comparison and how each perform. Sabresfan

Ooma vs. MagicJack vs. Vonage

Post by robinwilson2 »

So I looked up Ooma and it appears that they are essentially the same thing as a Vonage device - hanging directly off of your network hub. They cost $250, but that's a 1-time fee. So it's like Vonage without the monthly cost. I can see how they would be better than Vonage.

At the current rates from MJ, it will take 11 years of MJ service to run up the cost to the same amount as Ooma ($53 with taxes and fees for the 1st year, and $20/year for the subsequent 10 years). Given that technology like this is only likely to be useful for 5 years (at best), I'll stick with the MJ. (I've already tried Vonage and I will never do that again!)

I am curious as to what the 100 Ohm resistor fix is doing to make the MJ caller ID work. I wonder if just getting an RJ11 plug and looping-back tip and ring with a 100-Ohm resistor, then plugging that into a dual-outlet jack that comes off of the MJ device (with your phone going to the other outlet) would work?

robinwilson2,
I was figuring almost the same as you but you have to deduct the cost of a ThinClient/ATA from the $250, so the break even point (when compared to MJ) would be about half of the 11 years you figured. Not to mention the bonus of not having to leave a computer on 24/7.

100K-ohm resistor across the phone line fixes the caller ID

Post by ThisIsMyUserName »

PS: just fixed a 3rd MJ setup with a 100k resistor across the phone line and once again it worked like a champ. I made a few of them, plug-n-play, that have a male and female RJ-11 modular phone plug and socket and the 100K-ohm resistor built-in. I'm gonna call it an "ID-10-T" kit (ID10T or "idiot") because it fixes the caller ID, took 10 minutes to make, and shows the cid on the Telephone. Also, because the MajicJack engineers must have been IDIOTS to forget to install this part, and most likely won't revise the hardware design on future ones because they probably don't follow this forum. I told the customer care camel and he didn't know what the heck I was typing about but said he would pass it on to the really really smart camel.

Cost of Ooma

Post by robinwilson2 »

I suppose if you don't already have a computer handy to plug the MJ into - then you would have to include the cost of a computer of some sort. But for the majority of people, this is a non-issue, so the cost differential still stands. Granted, it's no apples to apples - but it does represent the actual cost "out of pocket" for the average purchaser. Either way, MJ is still quite a bit less costly than Ooma. And Ooma's technology appears to be the same as that of Vonage - which is enough to make me shy away.

what I meant is that if you have a computer (which obviously you would have if you have internet service) but chose to run MJ on a ThinClient or ATA so that it is independant of that computer, then you would have to deduct the cost of that TC/ATA from the cost of the Ooma (which IS an ATA) if you are going to compare the same fruits.

By popular demand, I've just listed the solderless Y-adapter version of this fix on ebay . I'm calling it the CIDJak Mini. Priced at under $7 plus actual shipping, it's a bargain. Check it out HERE. I'm not trying to make a killing on this product, just recoup some costs and cover a little of my time while providing a solution for some of you that don't have the means to build this handy little device themselves.

And thanks to many members here, I'm just about sold out of thin clients. I'll have more for you in about a week...

Whole house wired!!!

Post by BrianLee1 »

Just wanted everyone to know, I went to CVS last night and bought the MagicJack. I was tired of the calls I didn't want, and being a night person, it's just not feasible to turn off EVERY phone. Plus we have cell phones, so....

Had the Caller ID problem. I went to Radio-shack and bought a 5-pack of the 100k ohm resistors for 99cents. I put one in-line, and VOILA!!! Have caller ID. Numbers only, of coarse, but still. For the price of MagicJack, I'll take the inconvience. I have 5 phones in the house, and they all work. All ring. All show caller ID. Quality seems pretty good.

When I say in-line, I mean that magicjack is in my office downstairs, right next to the utility closet that houses my network wires, cable, phone, etc. I spliced the MagicJack line INTO the house phone wires. First I disconnected the phone company wires outside.

Phones were working, but I wasn't getting caller ID. SO, i went and got the resistors. I took some telephone wire, two pieces. Added the resistor between the two, and then wired THAT to the MagicJack and the home phone, and it works fine, so far. I have four more resistors left over. So....I'm happy so far.

Caller ID Fix

Post by Courtland »

I have MJ out to a Lucent Partner II Control Panel with 4 Partner 18 Phone extensions. Have not had CID show up on those phones with the PC I am now using. When I first installed MJ last week on a MacBook Pro and tested the system caller ID did work on the Lucent Phones. Now they will not. Will try the 100k resister between ring & Tip prior to the Lueccent box. Stayed tuned.

Why is CID working all of a sudden?

Post by nestman »

The CID has always worked on my computer screen, but never on my corded phone that has it's own LCD screen and power supply. I just decided to give up trying to make it work, as none of the suggestions here seemed to help.

Well, this past weekend it started to work out of the blue. I'm really excited, because that means I can locate MJ downstairs in the office, and not have to keep it tethered to my 2nd laptop, just to see who is calling.

Does anyone know why this started to work suddenly? Did a new version of the software get downloaded automatically?

Caller ID resistor fix works

Post by wingnut67 »

Like so many others, my caller ID worked fine when I had a regular landline, but never worked after switching to MagicJack. The MagicJack is connected to one of my phone wall jacks, not directly to any phone.

After reading the other forum entries, I fixed the problem in less than a minute with a 120K ohm resistor.

I didn't have a 100k on hand which was recommended, so it appears the value isn't critical. I also had an old telephone wall jack handy, so I wrapped the resistor leads around the red and green screw terminals. Then I found a short phone cable, plugged one end into the modular phone jack, and the other end into a spare wall jack in my bedroom. If you only have one phone jack in your house you can use one of those two-in-one adapters.

Now any phone I have will work in any room through MagicJack, and the Caller ID works every time. Even my phone with Voice ID works. It's great to be able to hear who is calling without even looking at a phone.

I also have DSL, and looking to do the 100k resistor thing. So do I only have to put the resistor in-line between the MJ and my cordless phone? It will be more difficult for me to try to get to the in house wiring, as that plug goes to my DSL modem.

Thanks for any help.

I just got back from Radio Shack, and I didn't know which to buy either. The sales guy suggested 1/2 watt, and it worked for me. I have caller ID displayed now.

I did a very crude job of slicing, but it still works.

I do not know the answer to your question, if it matters or not, but it worked for me.

Anyone know if it makes a difference?

MJ CID

Post by smhutto »

Ok, tried the fix above and it works like... magic.

Since the actual power on a phone line is so low, I don't think the wattage should matter. I used the 1/2 W, 100 k-Ohm resistor from RS (part no. 271-1131, pkg of 5) and it worked fine.

Since my lash-up is a little different, here's a pic (ignore the lables on the splitter - it's obviously from an old fax machine :-) )

When we were designing the "Magicfeatures" software plugin, we found a big issue with the Caller ID transmission implementation on the magicJack.

Here's the real underlying source of the problem and how we fixed it in the plugin:

1. The Caller ID is transmitted sort of like modem tones between the 1st and 2nd physical rings. The standard ringing cadence is 2 seconds on and 4 seconds off. That part is implemented correctly.

2. For whatever reason, the magicJack blasts a loud inband ringing tone on the audio channel toward the phone at 1 second on and 2 seconds off. Unfortunately, the cadence does not line up with the physical ringing and that horrible loud inband ringing tone masks out the Caller ID transmission. Some phones can filter it out but most fail.

3. If you go to MENU/SWITCH TO HEADSET and turn up the sound on your computer speakers and place an incoming call to your phone, you will hear the horrible ringing tone that is normally sent toward your phone. Chances are that when you do this, you will also finally see the caller id number correctly display on your phone.

In the "Magicfeatures" software plugin, we fixed the problem by making the very 1st physical ring only 1 second long so the Caller ID transmission does not get interrupted by the inband ringing tone. Once we got that part sorted, it only seemed fitting to add Caller ID name display and Caller ID for call waiting calls.

What kind of Uniden set do you have? I have a 900 Mhz Uniden with the 3 wireless handsets. When I try the 100k Ohm resisitor fix, not only does it not fix the caller id, but the phones no longer ring. I remove the resistor and the phone rings but still no caller id.

Softphone still pops and displays CID in both cases. Any other thoughts?

If you have a sound card on your computer, right mouse click on the magicJack icon and make sure the top setting reads "Set To Telephone". Chances are that your caller id will work fine after making that change without any type of resistor solution.

Went to Radio Shack and got the 100k resister (guy tried to sell me a 1m saying it was the same thing) and looked at the couplings there before i went on ( they wanted 6.99 for a simple coupling) to Dollar Tree and picked up the coupling. Pulled it apart and used a pair of nail clippers to strip the wires. Tied the legs of the resister around the stripped area and clipped the excess. Popped the two halves back together. Easiest attachment I've done in a long time (if you cant tell i had no tools and really wanted to see if this fixed it) Connected the coupling at the magic jack end and all that happened was i lost my dial tone. Moved the coupling to the phone side of the line and it works perfectly fine. Found that strange but i reached the ultimate goal and thats all that matters. Thanks for the post, i would have never thought of this on my own.

Just wanted to thank you guys for the caller id fix. Now if I could just get rid of the echo and word skipping that I hear on my phone. People that I talk to say that I sound clear as a bell with no echo, and they only hear the word skipping every now and then. I have tried the powered usb hub, and the dsl filter. Actually unplugged the usb from the power supply and my phone audio cleared up fifty percent. I have been thinking about getting a broadband booster to help out my clear wire internet. I have been looking at the model thats made by hawking.

Still Not working for me

Post by jcbeaver76 »

I have tried both methods described in these forums for getting the caller ID to work. Bot the solder in the coupler and the non-solder using the duplex surface mount. Neither of them are working for me. I am having a hard time locating the REN for my phone system thinking that might be the cause. But from what it looks like the REN for my phone is very low.

Any suggestions?

All I did was wrap the resistor around the red and green terminals and the caller id works on all my phones. You can get one at radioshack for a few dollars or you could look into the magicfeatures plugin in the for sale/wanted section and this also takes care of the caller id problem.

I did the exact same thing. I wrapped the resistor around the terminals and I still get nothing. Actially... I wrapped it around the screws so that it is touching the terminals.

And the problem with using MagicFreatures is I am running this on a Mac, not a Windows box.

I'm assuming that you only have the MJ running under the virtual machine and not on the native Mac OS X? Did you also have to apply the 100K Ohm fix?

The downloadable Magicfeatures software plugin for magicJack provides a proper permanent fix to the real underlying magicJack bug that causes the caller id display problem.

It also provides caller id with name support as well as call waiting caller id support. Talking caller id is also available.

Just so everyone knows. The 100K ohm trick only works on Windows. I spoke to MJ customer service. And while the MJ does work on a Mac, the CID is not a supported function yet.

I just had great luck getting my inbound caller ID to work using a "extra power" USB cable, the kind that often ships with external portable hard drives. On this cable, there are two male USB type A connectors, one for data and power and the other for power only. On the other end of the cable is a female USB type A connector that the MagicJack plugs into. I found this cable at EverythingHerePlus.com. Here's the link: http://www.everythinghereplus.com/elect ... e-19cm-62f

After installing the cable, I had to go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers, then right-click on each USB Root Hub, select Properties, then select the Power Management tab, then uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" to ensure that power was being supplied to the power side of the cable.

Before installing this cable, I would get "No Data" or "Incomplete Data" on my Caller ID. After doing this, my inbound caller ID started working great!

Where might you find this fix, because caller ID doesn't work on mine either. I've already downloaded their "upgrade" package as of 2010-03-29, that doesn't do it.

Well, those folks don't answer the web, so I doubt I want to send them my money! The link times out...

The site seems to be down right now, which is rare... Trust me they are a legit outfit. Just do a search in this forum to see all the kudos.
I love seeing the name along with the # now when I get a call on my MJ. Thsy have that and SO much more. PLUS there is a 10 day free trial, you don't like it you don't buy it. Cant beat that.

UPDATE: as of 5pm EST the site was back up...

UPDATE #2 seems Wed the 31st of March is the last day of the 10 dollar price. No idea what it is going up too.

I don't see how to fix caller ID with this package. I have a phone that displays caller ID just fine on a normal phone line, but doesn't on the MagicJack. I installed the trial of this package, and it still doesn't display any incoming caller ID.

If it doesn't fix that, it's not worth the money to me. ;)

I assume you tried a different phone?
Also check out the forum on the web page I mentioned as you can contact them and they may be able to help.
Or send RedPepper a PM and maybe he can make a suggestion.
