Anyone use Grandcentral ith or without MJ?

Post by markdneck »

I like the Grandcentral.com's ability to block phone sales pitches. We work early hours and bet we get 3 calls a day from jerks selling car warrantees and real estate and stock sales people. They call and wake us up yet with elderly parents we need to keep our phone turned on. The "do not call list sure doesn't work for me. I assume MJ doesn't have blocking?

I just ordered two MJs, can't wait for them to arrive. I even paid for "rush" delivery. I got 5 years for $45 so I can afford an extra $6 for faster delivery. For me it will be second home phone. For my daughter it will save all the allowance she spends on her cell phone.

DO NOT tell your daughter that it is cheap... I told my sister how cheap it was and she picks out little defects in it.... Still cranks abt 400 minutes (week day and night combined) ever.

I don't understand "don't tell her it's cheap"?

Now she talks all the time on her cell phone so what's the difference if she is on MJ all the time? You guys do like your MJ, right? Mine will be here Monday. If I can get rid of my home phone I can save $1000 a yer ... to use for gasoline I guess!

To answer the question in your title. Many of us use MJ & GC together. Especially the folks who can't get a local area code with MJ. I like using GC for the same reason you do - to be able to block out calls when I want.

Does GC cost anything? I reserved a number but I guess I can receive an invitation from someone. Will someone invite me, lol.

I noticed my GrandCentral invite feature is missing right now. I guess Google has put a hold on adding new members.

Here is your answer:

"Thank you for your interest in GrandCentral. We will let you know as soon as we open up our service to more users. At that time you will be able to choose the specific phone number that you would like to use. We will make all possible efforts to ensure there are numbers in the area code or city you have selected, but there may be some areas where we won't have coverage. We'll do our best.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So how have you configured your MJ & GC set-up?

Could you let us know your settings?

Thanks!

Bukzin... I think I was one of the lucky ones able to get Grand Central before they quit accepting Beta testers. I think the concept is kewl but I'm not really using it to its fullest because I'm afraid the number I have may go away if Google shuts it down. However, to answer your question, I use it with my MJ and my personal and office cell phone, so I can use it to answer any phone.

I, too, have had it with telemarketers and political callers so it's a great screening tool. Not sure if that answers your question, but that's how I use it for the time being.

In response to jkb246's comment, I'm not looking to start any rumors but I've been stung before when I relied on a free, beta service that changed the rules on me. So, I'm a little more cautious these days.

If they charged for it and set up a SoftPhone sytem

It might be a great competitor for MJ. I wouldn't mind paying for that since MJ doesn't seem to be living up to it's potential and google has more money than god.

IMO, apples and oranges. One of the features I would like to see in GC is the ability to input a number to dial directly. I use my MJ to sit at the computer and dial at will from the phone. DTMF is a little hinkey sometimes, but most of the time, I use my MJ just like any other phone.

The other thing I would like to see in GC is the ability to add the web calling feature to my email, so someone could just click on an icon in my email sig. I don't think of GC & MJ as competitors but as complimentary services. Also, I use my GC to connect to my cell phone so, 1.) I can keep it private some some folks I'd just as soon only talk to on my terms, (vendors, etc.) and 2.) I can manage my cell phone minutes by choosing to p/u the MJ instead of the cell phone and talk as long as I'd like.

BTW, one day when I was testing the GC dial out feature, a screen came up and said I'd exceeded my allowable minutes. It was only there for a second and looked like a glitch but I would suspect this will become a revenue source for them in the future.

I have a perl script at the end of this thread that lets you dial from the command line. http://groups.google.com/group/grandcen ... 295edcf2e1 .

Stewart... that's amazing!!! Since I don't know anything about Perl, I had to do a little fooling around, locate a Perl interpreter, etc, but by darn the thing works like a charm!!!

Thank you! It's nothing short of miraculous; I'm not kidding.
