You computer geniuses out there please help. I have only had my Magic Jack about 3 days and have nothing but problems. I seem to be able to make calls fine. problems come in when I'm receiving a call. Phone rings I pick it up and say hello. Nothing there, wait a few seconds and it hangs up. When I call the people back they tell me they can hear me fine, but I can't hear them?? Also, in the compatibility Magic Jack runs they are all fine but one and it says unable to access your Magic Jack?? I have switched USB ports, gotten a different phone etc. Its really getting old.

Thanks
Dianne

Hi Curious George,I use Windows XP. NOt sure what puter specks you want?? I have DSL through my phone company. I have used a portable phone and also one that is wired. You have to be very specific with what you need with me. I don't understand half of what I read here!!!

Try to connect your PC directly to the DSL modem, bypassing any router you may have. Reboot the DSL modem & the PC, then try to place incoming call to your MJ number again. If this time it's working fine then the problem could be your router is blocking your VOIP call. If it's still not working then try to disable any software firewall on your PC and try again.

Magic Jack help

Post by heartlandpom »

Like Magic, thanks for the reply. My DSL has one plug that goes directly to the puter and the other goes to the jack in the wall. i rebooted the DSL and dialed my mj number and it put me to my voicemail. Seems like that might be an improvement to me??

What's the brand and model # of the DSl modem? Some DSL modem has built-in router/firewall function and the default setting of the firewall may block some internet application including VOIP ports.

Is it the Comtrend CT-5071 like in this link?

http://www.newtechindustries.com/newtec ... router.htm

If so, it has a buit-in firewall. You will need to log into the setup page and lower the firewall setting or disable the firewall temporarily for testing.

The problem is not you it is MagicJack. I have had mine for over 2 months and it worked flawlessly until they performed their "Upgrade" of the system last week. I have the exact same problem you do and it has been going on now for more than 1 week. It is a crap shoot as to whether an incoming call will work.

I have been on the chat several times in the last week and I am always told they are having problems and that their engineers are working on it. I was told last night that "at least one of our main Internet servers is down. Our engineers are working on it and hope to have the problem resolved within the next few hours." I am very frustrated at this point as the service prior to last week's "upgrade" was flawless and very satisfying.

Do you happen to be in the Midwest? The problems seem to be occurring in the Ohio, Indiana areas.

Sorry you had to come in during this but all we can do is wait and hope they fix the darn thing.

I am in Indiana. This is such a pain. I will say in Magic Jack's behalf that I have been emailing At Dan's address. They have been very prompt in answering about my problems. Nothing has worked so far. Last I heard they were sending me a new device. Guess its a matter of how much aggrivation you can stand. My DSL is Comtrend Ct-5621.

The problem is definitely them. I have gone through every troubleshooting step you possibly can and the chat session always ends with them admitting to a problem. All we can do is wait.

I had been so happy with the service up to this point that I was about ready to disconnect my landline.

I had been so happy with the service up to this point that I was about ready to disconnect my landline.
Last Thursday out of frustration I emailed our boy Dan (Borislow) and explained the problems I had been experiencing since the upgrade. He replied within 2 minutes stating it had nothing to do with the upgrade and they would fix it. He forwarded the email to a Richard asking him to get on it immediately. Richard emailed me within 20 minutes and asked a bunch of questions.

When I returned home Friday I tested the phone and it still was not working properly. I emailed Richard and asked if they did anything. He called me within 3 minutes and told me they thought they had it fixed but did not. He said they would fix it by Monday or send me a new magicJack. By Sunday it started working and has worked perfectly since!

It seems if you communicate with the appropriate people things WILL actually get resolved.

Happy MJ user again!

Hi, it took me a long time to figure out this issue. My wife and I had decided to give up on Magic Jack and go back to Verizon when I stumbled across something interesting about my internet connection. Apparently when you are not using your internet connection the company lets you go dormant. I found that when someone calls me it wakes up my internet but it is too late to get the call. This is why when they call you back you can hear them. The call back works because your connection is reestablished. What I do is keep a browser open at all times connected to a site that does an automatic refresh like foxnews.com, cnn.com …. Since I have done this we have been loving the magic jack and the money it is saving us. I also had a friend in a different state with the same issue and on this advice he has not had the problem any longer either. Please let me know if this works for you 

What internet company do you have? What you described may not be the internet company but perhaps it's your PC's power management mode (sleep mode, standby mode, hibernation mode, etc.). Keeping refreshing the browser prevents the PC going into sleep mode. You may want to set your PC's "System standby" setting to "Never".

How can you say it them? I haven't had problems for weeks now. The latest upgrade didn't seem to change a thing. There were a few days I couldn't access voicemail but I prefer my home answering machine anyway. MJ vm still doesn't have a way to adjust the time settings, so it's useless to me.

Heartlandpom - are you still having troubles? Are you running any personal firewall or anti-virus on your system? Like Norton or McAfee (to name the big ones)

I know I'm starting to sound like a pitchman for the Hawking Broadband Booster but this little device is a must have for dsl users and any voip phone, especially MJ. Without it I would never keep MJ as I have to have clear calls. My friends now tell me how much better it sounds when we talk. They may be discontinuing these so best get one before their gone. They can be had on EBAY for as little as $35.00.

Comcast

I HAVE ALREADY SET ALL OF THE LAPTOP CHANGES TO DON'T TURN OFF EVER .....
I have been working in the computer science field for more than 20 years and have a computer company that looks into system problems for large companies....

All of my friends that have followed this advice are now happy with their magic jack. Even my wife is ok with keeping it now. Funny enough that this site seems to keep the connection live.

This is not entirely nuts, I can set my router to be "On Demand" which means it keeps the Internet connection active only if used. I do however have the router set to "Always connected". Do you have a configurable router that may be set to "On Demand"?

Dan's Main Man For Tech Support

Post by saxman »

If you have grown tired and frustrated from the online tech support people who try but are really not that good, then try emailing the head mechanic in this company. His name is Mike Shippey and he just got my phone fixed after not being able to make alot of local calls for awhile. I'm in area 360-Dan gave him my problem and in one day it was fixed! Try him-
