Inbound CID - Solderless Fix

Post by str8shooter »

First of all.... kudos to snafu2 for the 100k resistor. We needed the cheapest, best looking fix we could think of, as we are re-sellers. I thought I would share with the forum since you have been so much help. Plug this into a splitter, and you are good to go. If you don't have a crimper, just use pliers.

The magicJack website is the place te buy MJ's. I offer local sales, installation, and repair in South Dakota. We also handle phone equipment like that little 100k do-dad.

do-dad

Post by str8shooter »

Hi Leons. I could sell you a do-dad if you like. But I am happy to expand on the instructions. The hardest part is getting the bends just right. To start, you must squeeze the resistor just enough to fit inside the plug. Then shape as per the picture. The crutial step is getting the two leads to go in the right sockets. The plug is a rj-12 round wire phone plug. An rj-11 or standard rj-12 phone plug will work as well. The wiring is the same on both plugs. Standard phone wiring uses the center two sockets for a single line phone. Whether you are using 4 or 6 conductor doesn't matter. It's the center two sockets. Resistors do not have a polarity, and can moount either direction. Please note: a typical 4 conductor plug is used for handsets, and is slightly smaller. You should use a standard 6 conductor plug if you can. The crimp is easily done with pliars. I used a leatherman on the first couple, then bought a crimper.
Good luck!

You can also just screw the resistor onto the back of the phone jack between the red and green wires if you are trying a whole house installation.

Yeah, I was referring to the doo-dad only....

I think you could make a few bucks on this forum if people knew where to order those. I probably would.... while I could figure out your instructions with some effort, I am lazy if I can just buy a neat and finished doo-dad for a cheap but fair price.

do-dad

Post by str8shooter »

bendle.........I sent you a cheap but fair price to your PM. Anyway, here it is.....$5 for a do-dad and since you are part of this forum, I'll throw in a couple cellphone antenna boosters. It was not my intention to use the forum for a sales platform, hence the detailed instructions. I hope I am not breaking any rules. PM me with your info, and I'll do the same.

Nope you didnt. I did get a response, but it just said you were a reseller. No price, no address, no payment terms.
I still am not sure how to order one and pay for it.

I bet if you posted a paypal address here you might start seeing some $5 deposits......... and I dont see how helping us out should be construed as a TOS violation... we can all agree the rules are there to protect us and if there is such a rule about selling, that this isnt why the rule is there!

$5 do-dad

Post by str8shooter »

Sorry bendle, I'll re-state the deal I came up with. $5 for 100k resistor inside an rj-12 round wire connector. As a bonus to my brothers on this forum, I'll throw in 2 cell antenna boosters. Here is my e-mail (and paypal):

On some phones, when using Magicjack, Caller ID is not displayed on the phone itself. Placing the 100K ohm resistor between the red and green phone wires apparently allows these phones to display the Caller Id number. I don't know why.

100k do-dad

Post by str8shooter »

Hi all. I just want to emphasize, the do-dad forces the phone to display the CID number only, not the name. It won't display the name even if the caller is on your contact list. Also, therre is some confusion on how to use the do-dad. You will have to purchase a splitter to plug the do-dad into right next to your phone line. The splitter then plugs into your MJ. And yes, I still have these do-dads available and will have them as long as they are needed.

MJ must have this problem under control, as I havn't sold a do-dad in 3 weeks. I will continue to keep these on hand just in case someone needs one.

I have a little different situation and I am not even sure this would help.

I have a splitter plugged into my magicjack. One line from the splitter goes to my base phone and the other 5.8ghz phone talk to that one. The other line goes to my DirecTV receiver (for on-screen callerID).

If I use the splitter, none of my phones display the CID. If I take the splitter out of teh equation, all phones display the CID just fine. But, of course, now I have lost CID on my TV (DirecTV).

Any solutions for this?

TIA,

John

CID DTV do-dad

Post by str8shooter »

Hi John. I am unsure if this will fix your problem. The do-dad puts 100k ohm of resistance in parallel with the phone line. When you add it to a third (parallel) circuit, the total resistance decreases. You may need a 50k ohm or more. ( the lower the number-the higher the resistance ) On the other hand, the 100k might work. I had to use a 20k on a 5 device line once. That was the only time I have ever had to use anything other than the 100k do-dad. I have installed several 2,3, and 4 device with no problem. I have never plugged into a dtv box though.

What kind of splitter are you using. If it's one of those DSL filters that look like a splitter, that would be a problem at least for me. I tried using one and lost my CID.

Thanks guys.

it is just a regular old RJ11 splitter that you would find a radioshack.

HEY MIKE

Post by str8shooter »

Hi all. "Mike" e-mailed me to ask if these were still available. I get a bad address when I try to answer. So I'll try to get his attention here. Yes, they are still avilable, and I'm still giving away antenna boosters with them.
