please help, cannot get to registration page

Post by rkhart »

I recieved two Magic Jacks in the mail today and I am having problems installing them. I am running windows xp service pack two with a linksys wireless "G" broadband router. I have zone alarm, avg, spybot, installed. Here is the problem. I hook up the magic jack into an available usb port. (I have tried powered and unpowered ports) I get the magic jack to appear and says "do not remove, download is in progress" Then an error pops up stating that the Magic Jack cannot connect to the internet. It takes me to the Magic Fix webpage and everything shows good with green check marks. I have been on live chat all day and they cant seem to help. I have opened up ports UDP 5060-5070, TCO 80 and 443 on my router. Still does not connect. I have tried to disable the firewalls, anti virus, and everything else I can think of doing. Still now download. I try to download the upgrade and it keeps stopping at 17% download. I do have a blue light on the magic jack. I have also tried to install the magic jacks on two different computers and still will not download the registration. Thank you in advance for helping out.

Check ZoneAlarm if it is blocking MJ/Ports.

Is your DSL modem configured as a router? (If your Linksys router WAN IP is not your 71.142.xx.xx public IP, the modem is acting as router.) If so, the modem's firewall may be causing trouble; try a lower setting or putting it in bridge mode (requires setting up PPPoE on your router).

Also, you might try testing using a wired connection from one PC directly to DSL modem, bypassing your router. If your modem is acting as a bridge, you'll need to set up PPPoE on your PC for this test. For security, when testing without the router, don't disable your firewall at the same time.

Make sure that you don't have a proxy server set up in IE, even if you don't normally use IE. Tools->Internet Options, Connections tab, LAN settings.

On any of the above tests, confirm that normal Web access is working, before trying MJ.

If still no luck, try to find out what access is failing, e.g. with Wireshark or with Fiddler2.

Update..

Post by rkhart »

Well I checked a few things and found these problems.

1-If I bypass the router (and just use the modem) I cannot make an internet connection. I used to only have a modem and the connection used to work fine. I tried with multiple computers including my laptop. Connection is great going through router but nothing when I bypass router and just use modem..

2- When I first plug in Magic Jack, I get a message saying cannot connect to internet. It takes me to the Magic Fix webpage. On this page it does a test of my computer. It always stops at "checking your audio" I can never get past this spot on Magic Fix. If I try to download the upgrade it will never let me go past 17% download.

Please let me know if anyone has had these issues. Thank you once again.

For your issue #1, make sure you power cycle both the modem & PC so that the modem could properly assign an IP address to the PC.

Log into your router (typically 192.168.1.1 for Linksys) and see how it is set up. If the WAN or Internet connection or configuration type is PPPoE, then your modem is set up as a bridge. If it's DHCP, then your modem is set up as a router. Confirm this by looking at the Status page. IP address should show as 71.142.x.x if modem is bridge, 192.168.x.x or 172.16.x.x if modem is router.

Now, if your modem is a bridge, to connect a PC directly, you need to set up PPPoE on the PC. This requires (from Control Panel->Network Connections) creating a new connection, in which you enter a user name and password supplied by your DSL provider (or chosen by you when you registered with them). You may already see such a connection and can double-click the icon to activate it.

If connection from PC directly to modem once worked, perhaps that was when you had a different ISP, e.g. cable, or you have had this service since the 90's when you didn't need PPPoE, or you used a different PC on which you had PPPoE set up.

When you post again, please tell make/model of modem and exact model of router, including hardware version (printed on unit) and firware version (from router status page).

If you connect your PC directly to your modem, bypassing the router, your PC should be assigned a public IP address from the modem, UNLESS:
1. your PC's network card is configured to have a static (fixed) private IP address. PC with fixed/private IP address would work fine behind a router but will not work directly with modem.
2. If you still receive a private IP address from your modem then it has a built-in router.

Please verify that your PC is assigned a non-private (public) IP address when you connected your PC directly to the modem. You can check the IP address by:
- in the system tray, near the clock, right click the network connection icon, select Status, then select the Support tab
- there it should show you the IP address your PC is assigned, Address Type should be "Assigned by DHCP" and IP Address should not be in the range of 10.x.x.x., 192.168.x.x, 172.16.x.x-172.31.x.x.

LM, don't forget that you are on cable but rkhart has DSL. AFAIK, no DSL modems will issue a public IP by DHCP. If DHCP works at all, the modem is set up as a router and the IP address given out will be private (192.168.x.x for modems recently supplied by AT&T/SBC/Pacbell). Otherwise, the modem is set up as a bridge (or is an older 'dumb' modem that can only be a bridge). In this case, for consumer DSL, PPPoE is mandatory, rkhart has likely entered DSL user name and password into the router, and will need to enter them into a network connection in order to connect to the modem directly.

I've seen some DSL modems out there that issue Public IP address by default, such as the SpeedStream 5100b:

Many thanks for the link; I was unaware of this development.

However, rkhart sent a PM indicating that PPPoE is set up on his router. At this point, I doubt (given that it's a WRT54GS with fairly old firmware) that his router is causing the problem, but just to be sure, here is how to connect the PC directly to the modem:

Open Control Panel->Network Connections. Click Create a new connection; the New Connection Wizard opens, click Next. Select Connect to the Internet, click Next. Select Set up my connection manually, click Next. Select Connect using ... user name and password, click Next. Type a name under ISP name (this is just the connection name and can be anything), click Next. Enter user name and password (same as you entered when you set up your router), uncheck Make this the default ..., click Next. Click Finish. Connect PC to modem, double click the icon for this connection, with luck you'll be on the Internet, and with really good luck your MJ will install.

You guys rock!!!

Let me start out by saying you guys rock!!!!! I was able to bypass my router and then plug in magic Jack and it works perfect.... I spent 12 hrs on live chat yesterday and they could not help me out. Now if I just knew the router settings so that I can hook my router back up, that would be great. I use my router to run multiple devices including my tivo's (3). Thanks again for all your help. Great Forum!!!!
