You probably don't need to actually transfer the chip. They will transfer the phone number for free from one device to another, or at least they would late last year. That was with a new device with a new year of service however.

But they should allow you to transfer what was left on your year to the other device, but you never know.

Regardless, that old chip would show up as not being associated with a registered account so you would have to have customer service walk you through any transfer whether you leave the chip in the old device or move it to your current one.

i talked to them and they told me they will send me another mj for price of $18.79 and they will transfer old number to it. but if i replace the magic chip i think the all data is on that chip then will work i guess. then will cost me $5

Chatting with them is such a pleasure. I was just given a slightly different option. And I'm betting if I went back I would get 2 more options.

They only gave me the option of renewing the old device for a full year, while still keeping my current device active for the remainder of it's paid time, even though it's "failing" and I don't want to use it. Then he insisted I could keep the same phone number associated with both active devices. I would love to see how that works. I should have tried it and then send one to a friend, have someone call the number and see which device rings first. Or maybe it's an easy way to get grandma involved in 3 way calling.

Was the $5 charge going to be for transferring the chip? My guy told me it wasn't possible because you could only register a "chip" once, but then he offered to register it again while it was in the old device. At that point I signed off.

Edit: I forgot to mention he said that they do not allow transfers of unused time from one device to another, whether the old device was inactive or not. If you can switch chips for $5 it doesn't sound bad considering the other options.

I went back to chat and was told the exact same story. I pressed for details on the same number being on 2 devices and was told it works that way, and that both devices will ring, that the software doesn't prevent it.

Neither time did I get offered a replacement device. Could be since they my year is done soon that I don't qualify. In any event, good luck with whatever you end up doing.

Re-flashing the old chip with the new chip's SN certainly sounds like a much better idea than trying to put the new chip in the old device.

Others would know more about this. But I think you need to be cautious about switching one chip into another device. They have different generations of devices which I assume might have different circuitry along with a different chip which could make them incompatible. Am still curious what they were offering you for a $5 fix.
