Telemarketing and the MagicJack

Since the last few months after I've had my MagicJack, I've randomly been getting telemarketing calls..let's see...eureka networks and some place offering me a warranty for a car I don't have. I have a grand central account along with my MJ number, and I think that this happens on both, judging by the numbers in my grand central history. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems, or might have a solution?

easiest solution if they are coming through your grand central account is to make the numbers as spam and have GC give the number has been disconnected message. Should take care of them. As for them calling your MJ number directly I dont know what to tell ya. Might have gotten a number that was freshly recycled and still have people calling for the old owner.

The other option is to simply pull a Tom Mabe on them. They won't bother you anymore.

have heard that one before, it's a good one. there is a comedian that does the same type of thing, he has his friends sign up for all kinds of contests and promotions using his phone number and messes with the marketers. his name is escaping me at the moment.

solution fixed, after 30 days if you're still getting telemarketing calls get the phone number, name of rep and time they called then file a complaint and they will get a$11,000 fine

do you give out your number a lot? the number shouldn't be in any directory listing of any kind unless you gave it out sometime. could be you have a re-issued number (happens a lot in bigger cities) and who ever had the number before ditched it because they were the stupid one who gave it out all the time.

I realize this post is from a month ago, but this technique (SPIT blocking) would only work if the calls are coming thru the GC account.

i.e., you would have to forward MJ -> GC, BUT then you lose ability to answer calls directly on your MJ (Call Forwarding is an "all or none" proposition) -- i.e., you would have to have another service (like Gizmo Project which is FREE INBOUND and can use ATA and tie to GC) to actually answer the call on. And of course, you would have to turn off the forwarding while you travel unless your GC ties to a Cell phone as well.

So then in this scenario, you are only using the MJ to provide you another phone # in addition to your GC # and you would be able to use it for Outbound calling.

It is not a joke; the law has some bite -- just make sure you get some as much info from the Telemarketer and report the infraction (an example site: http://www3.dncsolution.com/marketing/r ... e_0510.asp; might be self-serving for the site-owners but I have heard other cases on the news).

I always use bandit numbers to fill out online forms. You can get free number from K7 and JConnect. These are fax numbers that also have voicemail that alert you via email when someone sends a fax or a vm message.

You can then screen messages and return calls if you want. The GrandCentral trick is good...I use it and like it.

Also there is Numbar or www.craigsnumber.com and has many options for a disposable or renewable free number in your choice of area codes.

Enjoy and looking forward to getting a MagicJack soon and thanks to forum owner and the wise techs for this site, as ive been following MJ since i got burnt by SunRocket. It felt pretty strange when forum vanished off mj.com.
