The identifying mark on the new units is the white rectangle right above the "J" in MagicJack you see in the photo on the left and is absent from the Older MJ units pictured on the right.

That must be the encoder/decoder device that allows all your conversations to be monitored by the NSA. I'm glad I have the old version.

Darkman90808,

I have one each, I knew there was a good reason for hanging on to the old one. Thanks for the tip.

does the new one have the GPS chip, so you don't have to register your 911 address, (like a sprint cell phone?).
I know Dan talked about adding that chip would be about 25 cents to the cost of the device.

I think the design of the new one is basically the same as the old one, just using a one chip solution.

GPS? Hell no.... I don't think so at least... You can also tell teh difference because of teh packagign. My old one came in this hard plastic that i had to saw through, but the new one comes in nice foam. No cutting needed!

My "old" ones cames in the foamy packaging too. So I don't think that's a good test...

Would be curious if people think the new one is truly better.

I'm not so sure the "new" MJ was specifically designed to be better in the consumer quality sense of better call quality at this point. I believe the reason for the new design was to reduce manufacturing costs by going to a single chip design and to possibly make it more compatible with the new upcoming codec.

GuyOnTheAir,

My old one came in the foam package also. So I am positive that is not a good test.

However the white rectangle and the parts count on the new one is a dead give away. Not only does it have the white rectangle but it has one less Crystal can, at least on the top side of the board.

And to answer your other question about whether it is really better, not in my book. Don't get me wrong I have been impressed with the audio quality since I first unpacked my original unit. There may be some differences in performance between the two but under my normal operating conditions I sure as hell wouldn't run out and by another just to get whatever it is that the new one does for you and after three days I still can't see oops that should be hear any difference.

Well, good. You've saved me a couple bucks, and hassles...

I was thinking that maybe I just had to have a new version. I'll stick with my old ones for now. :-)

The ONLY reason I purchased one of the new ones was to figure out why they didn't want to work with the HP Thin Clients.

There appears to be multiple versions of the MJ. Mine is slightly different from the two pictures. It's more like the old version but the layout has some differences in it.

tvland,

Thanks for mudding up the water with yet a third version. I can't imagine what if any impact the intermediate version may present.

GuyOnTheAir,

Yes - ther is a fix. I posted it here in the Tips & Tricks.

It is merely changing the brand name (ALi) USB driver from "ALi to a Standard enhanced M$ USB driver" MJ V-2 seems to like that much better. If you plug a version 2 MJ into a factory configured T5710 you will immediately get the Blue Screen of Death.
