oldtimercurt: Great. I think MJ will meet my needs but I am confused by some of the ads. I'd appreciate your advice.
a. I want the new MJ-connected phone unit for an house-bound invalid. I want it to have a unique phone number so only people who know that private number can call in. (I don't want the invalid to be bothered by unwanted incoming calls, as she is now. I'll take all my other calls (including nuisance calls) through my existing Verizon-connected telephones.)
b. I understand that the MJ unit plugs into my pc through a USB port, right? --- FWIW, my pc is a Dell desktop with XP and it is connected to a wireless router that currently drives a remote iPad.
c. Where does the new MJ-connected phone unit plug in? Through a line splitter to the same telephone wall outlet that currently drives my Verizon phones?
d. Does the MJ unit cost $19.95/year or $45.00/yr? I am confused by some of the ads.
e. Where do I buy the unit? Is it offered by one company or by many? Is one provider any better than another?
Thanks for your help.

The number will NOT be listed anywhere, unless you add to an on-line
directory. Therefore you get almost no spam callers.
b. I understand that the MJ unit plugs into my pc through a USB port, right? --- FWIW, my pc is a Dell desktop with XP and it is connected to a wireless router that currently drives a remote iPad.
Now whether or not there is enough throughput to work google Voip test.

You will have to plug in a telephone of some kind to the magicjack. Search the forums here for those that have been found to work OK.
d. Does the MJ unit cost $19.95/year or $45.00/yr? I am confused by some of the ads.
Once you've bought it for the retail price, I suggest Walmart or Radio
Shack, so you can return it if it doesn't do what you wish. The yearly
renewal cost is about $21.00 with fees. I've been using 3 for 4 years.
e. Where do I buy the unit? Is it offered by one company or by many? Is one provider any better than another?
See above, you will want to buy it where you can get your money back
quickly should it not work out for you. Be sure that you create a NEW user
account for when you install it and then make that user a limited account.
Search these forums again.
