Problems with VPN

Post by makethiswork »

Hi,

Magicjack works great for making calls. However when I turn on my company VPN, the
majicjack stops working. Has anyone seen this problem? I need to be on my company network
and use majicjack at the same time. Please let me know how to work arounf this problem.

Thanks,
Girish.

If you are using the VPN software built into Windows and you don't need to access corporate IP addresses outside the subnet in which your VPN IP address is assigned, then go to Control Panel->Network connections, right-click the icon for the VPN, select Properties, select Networking tab, double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click Advanced, uncheck Use default gateway on remote network.

Otherwise, post what VPN software you are using, whether multiple subnets are needed, and what make/model of router (if any) and cable modem you have.
Also, with the VPN up, do a

Code: Select all

route print
at a command prompt and post the results (for privacy, mask your public IP and the IP of the VPN endpoint).

Some implementations of Cisco VPN, the corporate IT sweetheart, disable all network connections on the client-side and don't provide any means for restoring them. In my last encounter with Cisco VPN, I couldn't access computer or printers on the local LAN side when I was connected to my firm via Cisco VPN.

This isn't an MJ problem.

The corporate VPN I have used did the same thing. I simply created routes (with the "route" command) for all the IP addresses MJ uses. The VPN didn't get ahead of those.

The process is described on the wiki FAQ.

Actually IIRC there is a setting in CiscoVPN that allows you to access your "local" network while connecting via VPN.

Don't have it in front of me but I recall that a setting does exist.

Also, you should check your Proxy Settings: Start / Settings / Control Panel / Internet Options / Connections Tab / LAN Settings Button / Proxy Server Settings.

Often, if you are using your company hardware, they may have Proxy Servers set in such a way that MJ may try to connect via the Proxy Settings when you are connected via VPN -- therefore trying to connect via your "in-house" Proxy server rather than using your home internet connection to connect directly.

Just some possibilities.
