my MJ was working fine for about a year so I purchased 5 additional years. Then I decided to port my att number that I've had for over 30 years to MJ, as it seemed like a safe idea. WRONG!
3 days after requesting the porting I received email from MJ that it was complete and that I could receive and send from my ported number on the MJ. However I found that it only could dial out not receive. After contacting CS I was told that the transfer could take up to 10 working days before it will work. After 2 weeks had past and many texts to CS could not correct the problem. The CS rep said he was sending the problem it to a highly qualified technician. The next day I lost all functions of the MJ. Now after 20 hours the CS will not talk to me and continually ask me to wait while they check on something and then disconnect me. I now have had no phone for over 3 weeks because of Magic Jack!
It seems my only recourse is to try to port my number back to at&t and place a complaint to BBB of Florida and try to get a refund. Cheap evidently can turn into a nightmare, MJ has proven that to be a fact.
I recommend if you use MJ do not port and do not buy extra years service.

I just ported my number from Verizon-started on thursday. I got a message today that it was "finished". I called verizon to cancel my account and they said it will all be taken care of by the porting.
I am however able to receive calls and to make calls-had my brother check it out for me a few times from different phones. Maybe it's an ATT thing?
Hmm...now that I am checking my "log" it does seem like I am missing some calls. Wonder why my brother could get thru? Interesting...
EDIT: After reading more messages I went into the Menu section and my setting was at "headset" I guess by default. Once I changed that I have received all my calls since.

Experience porting from ATT
Here is my experience porting. I had both voice and DSL service with ATT. When I ported my number, ATT disconnected both my voice and DSL service! This left me with no phone or internet (or MJ). Their CS stated I would need to setup a new account for DSL only. They then issued a new phone number to be used for accounting purposes. Well the new number started working for voice (Not ordered or needed. I only noticed because I started to receive robo calls) but no DSL. After many calls and several days and a visit from a live tech (he was as baffled as I was) they said they could not connect me with DSL because they had no available connections because of bandwidth limitations in the neighborhood. They had given mine away when my account was disconnected. WOW. I think they thought they were going to punish me for trying to leave the fold.
A quick call to my local cable company got me up graded to real high speed internet at a lower rate! So after a week of suffering with ATT BS, I am now a very happy camper without them altogether.

They cannot charge you for porting your number back to ATT, they will try but they cannot.NOW MAGIC JACK WANTS $34 TO PORT BACK TO THEM
Additionally, Nettalk offers to some MJ customers free port ( it is beta testing though) so you may want to try that.
Forget the nonsense about complaining to FCC about MJ. they probably have a truckload of them.
That is what I thought at the time but wasn't entirely sure they could not interfere with the process.cell14 wrote:They cannot charge you for porting your number back to ATT, they will try but they cannot.NOW MAGIC JACK WANTS $34 TO PORT BACK TO THEM
.
This is how unscrupulous they are ....Magic Jack sends me an email while att was porting my no. back asking me to complete the porting request by clicking on their link in the email. That link tried to get me to pay them $34, I did steer away from that link as fast as i could.
Update
I finally got my ported # back last week. Hurray
Right after that, when logging into MJ a dialog box popped up asking if I would like a different local # for $10 or would I like to use the ported # again
...RIGHT!
This week I tried logging in again and a different dialog box came up asking if I wanted a vanity # or a different local #. No money was mentioned for the local, so I picked a new local # and the MJ is NOW FUNCTIONING as before. Hurray
It appears obvious MJ uses this ploy as one of many to make 5 yr service plans inoperative. Others have posted the similar thoughts on the net. Could it be MJ sees problems down the line fulfilling all those large bundled contracts?
