help with fax using magic jack

i have an gateway laptop, time warner high speed cable, brother mfc-j410w and magic jack. i can send a fax to a local number but not a long distance number. the number i am trying is also a magic jack number. this person uses the same fax machine and it works great for them. i have the machine settings to basic. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
