OBI or GVJack App?

This is an interesting dilemma BUT for the good !

Another alternative to get phone service though a left over Jack ...

I know how well the OBI preforms and cust service it A-1 ...

They both will be using GV ... So there is one comparison to evaluate ...

We'll have to wait and see when the GVJack App appears but more fun to come !!!

Everything RedPepper has put out has been A#1. The only difference I see between the two, off the top of my head, is the OBi doesnt need the PC on where GVJack app does. So if you already have an Obi ( I do) and a MJ dongle in the closet ( I do) I can see using one while the PC is on if you rather not have your OBi/Gv number showing and the other whilst your PC is off. They can both co-exist with each other quite nicely, in my opinion..

Will be a no-brainer for a "cheap bastard" like me if the GVJack App is in the $20 range.

I've already played with the posted suggestion somewhere in here to use the "un-hooked from MJ service" MJ dongle to make outgoing calls via GV and it works like a charm. So if I can add incoming calls to the equation for a small one-time charge I'm in for the App.

Another possible use would be travel, MJ dongle is much more compact than Obi+ AC adapter.
Or I could set up my second GV number with it, at least for the time being until the new version of Obi is ready.

BTW what surprises me that Dan apparently did not think about this and did not take any measures to make the use of the dongle by other providers impossible. He might be working on it now...

Nahhhhhh, other than the inital cost of the app, Dan cant make any money on it since GV is still free...

My best use for the obi is the two numbers I have are just for craigslist ...

I guess you could use the app for that also and get email when the computer is off ...

As opposed to setting it up to act as a simple landline alternative, some people may choose to set up their Google Voice account so that their mobile phone also rings on incoming calls.

This way the GVJack App becomes a low cost extension of their mobile phone service for use in their home or office where mobile phone coverage may not be so great without burning up mobile phone talk time minutes. If you leave and decide to turn off your computer calls are still forwarded to your mobile phone.

Google voice also lets you press "*" to switch between phones during a live call. Even if you answer the call via the "GVJack App", you can press "*" and pick up the call on your mobile phone as you walk out the door or vice versa.

Google Voice gives you a lot of different ways to set things up so it should be interesting to see what creative ideas people put into action. Some people and small businesses may also find being able to use the same phone for Skype, Google+ and Facebook voice and video chats useful.

Well, but he can LOOSE money, if the people start using the dongle with Goggle voice for free ( with one time download costs ) instead of paying him his new overpriced MJ subscription price.

New version?

I have two numbers now going in my 110 .

The new version will have 4 providers and 2 lines- you will be able to connect 2 phones to it.
Right now, you can only have one phone connected and 2 providers.

That's what I do. The advantage of that is that not only I can switch between cells and desk phone, but because both my cell phones ring, if i am in an area where one provider does not have coverage I can pick up the call on the other phone.
