DSL Filter / Land Line / Magicjack Wiring Help?

Post by Economister »

I love my new Magicjack, which so far works beautifully on most numbers with an old borrowed test-phone, but need to spiff up the whole connection thing.

Here's what I've got: AT&T land line service (which I need to keep, for certain incoming calls) and AT&T DSL service, which is, after a year, the only spam-free service I've ever had.

Here's how it's all connected at this point --

Phone wall outlet -> DSL filter, two outputs:
1) -> AT&T modem -> Ethernet -> Intel Mac
2) -> VTech wireless land line phone.

Here's how I imagine it needs to be connected:
Phone wall outlet -> DSL filter, two outputs:
1) -> AT&T modem -> Ethernet -> Intel Mac
2) -> VTech phone -> Magicjack -> Intel Mac

Two problems:

• First, if I connect it up that way, everything goes through the DSL filter;
• Second, if it's connected that way, I'm no longer connected to the land line.

I'm really stuck on how to pull this off. Endless pencil-drawn diagrams haven't
helped. If you have any suggestions -- the more specific and mechanical ("use
a yadayada at the output of the X and plug the input of the Y into the Z") the
better -- I'm really confused, and would very much appreciate the help.
I need to hire Dan!

I think most people just use two phones. I have a cheap GE cordless plugged into the magicjack, plugged into the computer. I have my orginal phone/answering machine plugged into the dsl filter, plugged into the wall.

I think you are trying to set up a 2 line phone. I have seen a couple of them before, each has had 2 connections on the back of the phone, then you plug in two lines, one coming from the wall the other coming from the magicjack into the two modular phone connections in the back of the base. Search the net for one of these if this is what you are trying to do. It's called something like a dual phone.

A/B switch

I use an A/B switch to switch between two VoIP providers. You could find one online easily enough or go the two line phone route.
