MJ on Gateway laptop 4520z

Post by suckercomp »

Hi Everybody,
with windows XP home edition
I am unable to initialize magic jack on gateway laptop , removed all the media programs
and even copied the magic jack folder from C:\Documents and Settings\**User--l\Application Data from a working computer
onto this laptop. There is no problem of power on USB's tried all four USB's on the
laptop.

Please suggest

Hi checkers and all

Sorry for the late reply.

I can try get a powered USB strip. But I don't get this kind of problem with any other USB device.
Want to make sure , I don't waste my money on the strip :)

Anyway will give it a shot and let everybody know....

Thanks Again.

When the MJ is plugged into the Gateway, does the blue light come on?
In Device Manager, you should see four new USB devices:
CD-ROM
Disk Drive
Human Interface Device
Sound Card

Are they all present and shown as working properly?

Have you tried running magicjack.exe from an appropriately set up shortcut? What happens when you launch it?

What happens when you doubleclick the shortcut to magicjack.exe that you created? Any splash screen, error message(s), etc?

Please post the values that you have in the 'Target' and 'Start in' fields of the shortcut, so we can see if they are set up correctly. (In your post, replace your user name and any other personal info with XXXXXX.)

Hello Stewart,

Ok, so many people have told me that my comp cannot power up the USB. In fact I did not agree. But I did give it a shot as so many people kept telling me. In any case, my computer was unable to start the software even with the power strip.

This provides power to the MagicJack and then connects to the computer.

There is no software at all.....on the computer. So I cannot tell you what the details.
Something on the computer does not allow the Magicjack to install the software....

I am really getting tired and I don't understand what's wrong.
by the way , I had Ipod working on my computer and it gets the power fine from USB. When I could not get magicjack working I kept removing all the players and Ipod softwares. Now practically my computer has no multimedia players.

I'm trying to help, but your answers seem very inconsistent.

On April 13, you posted:
> ... and even copied the magic jack folder from C:\Documents and Settings\**User--l\Application Data from a working computer ...
so I assume that there exists a populated mjusbsp folder on the Gateway laptop.

On April 28, I asked:
> Have you tried running magicjack.exe from an appropriately set up shortcut? What happens when you launch it?
and on May 1, you responded:
> Hello tired all of the above nothing works.
so I assume that on the Gateway you created a shortcut to the magicjack.exe that was copied from a working computer.

Yet, when I asked the straightforward question:
> What happens when you doubleclick the shortcut to magicjack.exe that you created? Any splash screen, error message(s), etc?
you answered:
> There is no software at all.....on the computer. So I cannot tell you what the details.

That is bizarre. What happened? Did you delete the files that you copied? Did they mysteriously disappear? Did you confirm that they got copied correctly?

Here are steps: -

1. Tried MJ very first time, nothing happened for a long time. When I tried to click around computer froze.
2. Got MJ magicfix run on my computer while MJ was plugged-in, magicfix got stuck on configuration check and computer froze.
The only way I could work on my computer without restarting was to unplug magic jack.
3. Contacted MJ online support , suggested me to copy the folder from a working computer to the computer not working.
Nothing happened.
4. Finally after 2 hours with support , they suggested I need a USB powered externally.
DELETED THE FOLDER COPIED FROM THE OTHER MACHINE, to start fresh.
5. Plugged in Magic jack to power strip and tried fresh - Deleted all the programs related to any multi media players.
Result - Looks like the connection is made to Magic Jack , internet connection is made (I can see the network) , but there are no folders created on the machine.
Finally FRUSTRATION

If I understand you correctly, when using the powered USB hub, nothing freezes. Please confirm.

With MJ plugged in, do you see in My Computer the CD-ROM created by MJ? If so, what letter is it and can you see the autorun.exe file in its root? If so, what happens when you double-click it?

In My Computer, can you see the USB disk drive created by MJ? If so, what letter is it and can you see the 'DONT USE THIS DRIVE' file in its root? Can you see the magicJack folder (it's 'hidden', so be use your PC has 'Show hidden files and folders' selected).

Hello Stewart

First I have to thank you for understanding the problem and trying to help me thus far.

Well the USB powered strip with MJ , does freeze the computer in the similar manner as without the USB powered strip.
Now whatever I am doing is the with a USB powered strip and MJ plugged in it.
Also I tried this experiment , I went on MYcomputer and plugged-in MJ with USB powered. I see nothing for the added drive. But the computer does make ding sound with the icon on the right hand corner task bar. So nothing appear , as soon as I pull out the MJ , I see MJ on the my computer for few seconds.
Plus no files downloaded on the computer in "C:\Documents and Settings\admin\Application Data\" no mjusbsp folder.

This is my conclusion with MJ , its not a problem with power in the USB. I had also used Ipod with this computer , which has been installed from my computer now. The problem exists with some Gateway software driver that is required to run the computer. I say that for example the pointing device software , which is required for laptop to read the hand movement like a mouse. I am not saying this is the cause , all I am saying there maybe some conflict with Gateway default suite which requires the computer to work correctly.
Again its a speculation . My frustration has been with MJ support , they have only few solutions for all the problems.
Either unistall media players ( which have not been an issue for others, I uninstalled all that I have ever had also cleaned up the registry) or get power strip.

When you hold down the shift key when you plug in MJ (and continue to hold it for several seconds), does the computer still freeze? If so, in the frozen state; Does the cursor move when you move the mouse? Does control-alt-delete get you to Task Manager? Do other keyboard functions work, e.g. ctrl-esc to get start menu?
