No Ringback on MagicJack Plus

Post by DebtFreeMe »

I've typed with Tech support for over 2 hours in the last two days, to no avail.

Whenever anyone calls my house phone (the one with MJ plus) they do not get any indication that the phone in my house is ringing (no ringback).

The phone works fine, I can receive calls and dial out with no problems, its just that if you call my house you hear silence until someone answers the phone.

This problem started about 5 days ago, it worked fine before that...

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I got Old ver. MJ and this same thing started happening to the callers to my MJ lately, from about 2-8-12.

I hear the rings but some callers say its just dead silence till i answered!!

I guess it is from their latest 'unlucky-u-update' or a server problem.

I'd give them about a week and see how it goes.

This type of problems get usually resolved sooner or later.
The bottom line is that MJ is simply not reliable enough to handle incoming calls. With outgoing calls you have the choice not to use it whenever problems occur

:?: What? It's nonsense, total nonsense, to say that "MJ is simply not reliable enough to handle incoming calls".

There are too many of us that have had multiple years of fine MJ service for a black and white statement like that to be ignored. My only issue in 2.5 years with ANY incoming calls was a short period after I installed the magicTalk app and one caller kept getting his calls intercepted.

There are no doubt people who have had, are having, and will have issues with MJ. But this forum would be bombed with posts if incoming calls was a systemic issue with MJ. So while a few, for whatever reason, may find it not reliable for incoming calls, to suggest that is a problem with the product in general is N O N S E N S E. In my opinion.

Well, I thought that the rather rude first answer was just a glitch, apparently not so.... :?

Different people have different expectations and are willing to pay different amounts of money for fulfilling those expectations. We do not need to go that way and re chew everything what has been said in that regard.
I have been with MJ longer than you. While the overall average quality has significantly improved over the years, the reliability has not. Actually, at least from my experience, it got worse.
When MJ works, it works pretty well, not far below a land line. It easily beats LP which I also use and in such moments, it is even better than GV.
Unfortunately, the quality fluctuates. Sometimes it is the ISP ( in that case the other providers has problems as well ), but very often it is just MJ.
My voice mail was down several times and twice I could not be reached for several days, confusing people, in one case a missed a very important call/message. Sometimes you just cannot explain to people that they should not call you back on the number you called from.
With outgoing calls, whenever the quality is really bad, I can always apologize and redial from a different line. With incoming calls it does not work that way. Last fall when I decided to look for other providers there wa a 2 week period of time in which I could not use MJ at all, things were that bad.
You are mistaken that everybody who is unhappy with MJ would go and flood this forum with complaints.Only very few do and some of those complaints are ridiculous, but the bulk of people just quietly walks away or talks about their experience elsewhere. I met on other forums highly knowledgeable VOIP people who consider MJ a joke and junk. I would not go that far, with all the problems I had I think I got good performance for my money over the years only I do not think that with the new pricing MJ is still worth it considered the options out there and the level of reliability I need.

Nope, you interpreted it correctly the first time.

To say it is unreliable for your standards, and the standards of experts on other forums, is one thing. But to make a blanket black and white statement that it is just plain "unreliable for incoming calls", of course flies in the face of too many other user reports who have had no issues on incoming calls for years, and is of course total utter nonsense, in my opinion of course.

Edit: To be clear, I wasn't trying to be rude, so you mis-interpreted that. But the "nonsense" answer was obviously not a glitch. I tend to say what I mean, and mean what I say. I actually was deciding between laughable and nonsense and decided on the latter.

As they say these days, whatever. 8)

You got that in before my edit. I wasn't trying to be rude, (although I don't shy away from it), I was just giving my opinion on your opinion. And with an incoming call or two a day for almost 2.5 years, I'm not sure how more reliable it can get.

Edit: That said, even as reliable as it has been for me for 2.5 years, since I'm such a cheap ass, if the PCPhoneSoft app turns out to be as reliable, or close enough, I will not be renewing my MJ in November.

If we go from general experience with their previous products, the chance for that is at 90 +%. Main reason why I did not toss one of my two dongles (where I ported the number away from MJ ) into electronic waste bin.

I'm very happy with their MagicFeatures product so I'm optimistic.

My ex, whose experience with MJ convinced me to try it, now just uses her smart phone for all calling and did not renew her MJ. I'm in the process of having one of my kids sweet talk her into letting me have her old device as a back-up.

It seems the problem is resolved for the moment. How about for others who had this problem?
