Old magic jack
I moved and put in my magic jack and could not get service. 3 hours with their chat tech support didn't help. So a year later I put it in again and it said already registered and that was with a different email address and password. So I guess I should throw it away because nobody else can use it nor can I than maybe I should just go and buy another one because they are cheap and I did have one work for over a year which did save me money.
I would definitely not recommend throwing it away. Somebody can definitely use it.
Your old MJ dongle can be re-purposed and used with Google Voice's phone network with the new "GVJack" App coming out this week. You also get a lot more features including 7 digit dialing, caller name display, call screening and voice mail waiting.
Google Voice continues to offer free phone numbers and long distance service to users in North America.
You will be able to download and try out the "GVJack" App for up to 7 days to see if it meets your needs prior to purchase. The one time purchase is significantly less than a standard 1 year MJ service renewal.

Has the GVJack APP been tested outside of the US ( with a US based Gmail/GV number) ? That would be interesting for many people.Google Voice continues to offer free phone numbers and long distance service to users in North America.

The "GVJack" App was designed to work for users wherever they are in the world as long as the phone they have plugged in is compatible with a MJ dongle. Even if they don't have a Google Voice phone number, it can still be used for outgoing phone calls and for voice/video chat calls.
Should a user have any doubts about whether it is going to work wherever they are located in the world before they go out and try to source a MJ dongle, literally all they need to do is log into their Gmail e-mail account and manually place some phone calls from the Gmail webpage itself. If a user is able to set up a Google Voice phone number from their location the same tests should be done for incoming calls.
The "GVJack" App extends the very same exact service that a user tries and tests above directly to the phone that is connected to any original regular MJ dongle without the need to have a webpage or dialer open on your screen or minimized to the taskbar.
Anyway it should be available for download sometime over the next 24 hours to try out. We are ready to resolve any wrinkles that are initially reported fairly quickly.

You only need to set up a new separate Gmail / Google Voice account if you plan to use both devices at the same time. If you don't, the Google Voice network will route incoming calls to whichever device last registered itself with the network.
On a slightly different subject, the "GVJack" App is designed to allow users to sign in with the whatever Gmail account they already have set up for sending and receiving e-mail messages online. They can still set up a separate Gmail account that will just be used for phone calls but it is not strictly necessary.
