Is MagicJack Secure

Post by andyb »

I was reading how voip packets are easily intercepted. I see you all are very knowledgeable and would like some iput!
So my question is how secure are the packets with magic jack? Is there any level of encryption? If I run open VPN will that change my MJ IP?
I recently cancelled my Voip provider after receiving a $98 bill when it was supposed to be unlimited
Iv'e owned the MJ for about almost a yr now and it seems the MJ quality has reached 100% the last couple months .

Im really glad I found this forum it rocks.

i'm no expert, but i don't know of any voip that's totally secure. For that matter, regular phone lines arent' that secure, and either are cell phones. If someone really want to listen in on someone's conversation, there will be ways to do it.

Mr. mjscott,

I second your comment about phone security. Hell there are folks on this site that now how to capture packet information and tell you your SIP credentials, much less any drug deals you have going.

On a serious note - it wold take someone with a very serious interest in gathering your particular information and the equipment and expertise to do it. So unless you have something to hide or the Federalies are after you I wouldn't worry to much about it. One of your biggest defense mechanism is the same thing that keeps you from winning the Lottery, the shear number of people using VOIP statistically make your chances of being singled out VERY slim.

VOIP service providers are now required by law to provide CALEA support (court-ordered wiretapping):
