Why do I need to keep MagicJack computer on 24/7?
I heard somewhere that you have to keep your computer on 24/7 w/MJ. Is that really necessary or is that only if you want to be able to receive calls too? I like to let my computer sleep a lot.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Your computer has to be on for you to make or receive calls. If you want to turn your PC off at night, your phone cannot and will not work.jayeskreezy wrote:I heard somewhere that you have to keep your computer on 24/7 w/MJ. You can let it sleep all you want and it will not effect your MJ, you will just have to restart MJ when you want to make a call. Also search this site and you will find a script called Kill (process) in this case MagicJack which effectively turns MJ off and will allow your computer to sleep, hibernate or just generally goof-off - whatever.jayeskreezy wrote:I heard somewhere that you have to keep your computer on 24/7 w/MJ. You do not have to keep it on 24/7 if you choose not to.
PS - I personally do not have enough confidence in MJ yet to count on it for incoming calls. If they (MJ, Inc.) are working on the system or they have an outage for whatever reason you are going to miss calls and never know it. Then their is alway the situation like I had the last evening where my Cable company decided to have an impromptu maintenance event that lasted several hours. Well no fault on MJ's part but still no incoming phone calls and in this case outgoing also, but if I had attempted to make an outgoing I would at least know there was a problem, with incoming you technically could go for days with no incoming calls (I mean who calls their home number from their cell several times a day just to make sure it is working) only to find out your Computer, ISP or MagicJack was glitched for whatever reason.

True - the land line sure can go down also, but in all honesty in the last 40 years I could count the number of times my land line has gone down on one hand.HendersonMike wrote:Same thing goes for a standard landline from ya phone company. If it's down and no one calls you, you won't know either unless you check it occasionally.

Is the script any better than just hitting Ctrl/Alt/Delete and having the Task Manager pop up and then highlight MagicJack and hit 'End Task"?HolmanGT wrote:. BTW I'd rather have someone pull out my fingernails than do a search on this forum. Don't know what's wrong but the search function is painfully slow, especially on the second try.

2. type taskkill /F /IM MagicJack.exe
3. save the file as End MagicJack.bat on your desktop.
That's it.
lenagainster,
No I don't think there is any difference between a Task Manager Kill and the script. Two roads to the same place.
Fingernails - I sure am glad Richard posted the script I would hate to see you on the couch with a pair of channel-locks tugging away. Ouch!

can you say Grand Central + MJ?
I think this is a winning combination. Use Grand Central as your 'published' number - also seems you'll have a better chance of getting a local. Then, you are in control. Computer off, computer crash, whatever.... just going to a friends house! You can have your GC "follow" or "find" you on alternate phones, like most probably, your cell.

I use my mJ as my primary line as did with vonage. My cell phone is my back-up.

I second the forwarded calls. Didn't realize it would work that way until I was trying to find an alternative for a friend that I couldn't invite to GRand Central. Now I have all my MJ calls forwarded to my cell. Better yet...I'm guessing I could have it forward to my Grand central then to my cell. Once I get on the Sprint to home or whatever all my MJ incoming calls forwarded to GC then forwarded to my cell would not eat my SERO minutes. Will that work? That sounds good in theory but.....can a call be forwarded that many times?

Porting My Number MJ --> Grandcentral --> 2nd MJ
We have had our home phone for years. Wife will not give up the number so I am waiting to Port it. For the past several months, MJ says PORTING will be available in the coming months but still nothing...I know I can use the Phone Number bank to port it and forward it from there and I might do it but this is what I learned and would like.
I currently have a MJ and love it. I use it as a second phone because my wife is always on the main phone and when I am on the main phone, call waiting is constantly ringing in. I have Grandcentral but with out of state number.
I want to port my number either to MJ or Preferably Grandcentral.
If I have it ported to MJ I will purchase a 2nd MJ.
I want to use MJ as my main phone.
I need the second because when I use the call forwarding function on MJ with it plugged in to the computer, MJ never Rings
At $20 a year, I can afford 2 or more MJs. Use the Ported MJ to forward calls to grandcentral for all the features. Use the 2nd MJ to recieve all the incoming calls.
I took an out of state Grandcentral Number for 2 reasons.
1st reason is an establised Grandcentral Account was given to me by a friend that had 2 accounts and there doesn't seem to be a way to change the number
2nd Reason. It was given to me because my Brother is in Iraq and can call Houston Exchanges for Free and this was a Houston Exchange.
I really wish I could avoid having to have MJ plugged into my Computer. I am thinking of when I can port a number, getting www.ooma.com so I can avoid monthly fees and not relying on the computer being required to be on all the time. I would prefer to find a cheaper solution like hacking MJ to work with an unlocked PAP2 device. Sorry if I have this wrong but would love to learn how to do it. OOMA seems like an easier but more costly solution to hacking the MJ and PAP2 but at $250 investment, I would be very upset if they go out of business in a few months. MJ pays for itself in less then 1 month compared to what I pay to Ma Bell.
I am interested in other Ideas that may be more efficient, cheaper, better etc.

rawthang,
I don't know if this is appreciated on this forum or not but the Admin can always pull it (is there a policy on this Stewart?).
I will sell you an HP Thin Client set up and ready to MJ right out of the box. If you are interested PM me.
This will allow you to run MJ 24/7 and not have it lurking around on your main computer. The price tag is less than the one you mentioned and if MJ goes under you could always use it with a Vonage Stick or anyone else's VOIP on a stick (so to speak) I prefer Dream Sicicles.

I used Notepad to make this batch file work for MJ on XP MCE. That OS blew off my computer recently. Skip the sorry details. The .bat did work tho'!richardtaur wrote:1. I reinstalled XP Home. I've driven myself nutty trying to make this work since.
I've changed Drive letters tried WordPad. Just can't fathom why it worked on one version of XP, and not this one?

Re: Why do I need to keep MagicJack computer on 24/7?
I think I understand why the .bat file that worked to disarm MJ on XP MCE, which is actually an XP Pro version, doesn't work on XP Home. Taskkill is not XP Home language. I tried Tskill, with the correct drive no, but nada.preachjohn wrote:I used Notepad to make this batch file work for MJ on XP MCE. That OS blew off my computer recently. Skip the sorry details.
