Hotel Firewall

Post by admiller »

My MJ has been working fine. I use it mostly when I travel. I seem to be at a hotel (in Japan) with a firewall preventing calls to go out. I do get a dial tone but the calls won't go through. I then get a message telling me to connect to the internet. Everything else checks out OK. Any tips on a work around?

I've used MJ from Tokyo Hilton in Shinjuku with no trouble.

Try http://www.testyourvoip.com/ to Boston (with MJ unplugged). If you can't get a score, even when it retries on an alternate port, you may be out of luck, unless you can connect through a VPN that is MJ compatible. Does the softphone show Ready to Call? When you dial, what status messages appear in softphone? Do you know if the called phone rings?

My MJ phone gets a dial tone, I diall the number, the phone does ring on the other end... however cannot hear anyone.

Running through a VPN.... should I just try running it directly without the VPN?

Try without the VPN. If that works ok, you may be able to adjust the routing tables so that the VoIP takes a direct path, but you can still access the private network over the VPN.
