RE: New MJ won't work
I had ordered a new MJ for my parents who live outside the US. I sent the MJ to them and my sister was able to register and get a number. However, she could never get a dial tone and kept getting a proxy registry error. I had her try it with a different computer to isolate the issue to either the MJ or the PC. Unfortunately, the problem persisted so I figured it was the MJ. Several live chats with "tech support" at MJ did not resolve the issue either. I had her mail it back to me, and tried it on my laptop with no success. Has anyone else had this issue? I am skeptical if I should order another MJ. Also, if do order a second one, can I try to set it up first before sending it overseas? Thanks.
They had a firewall, but when my sister talked to the tech support they had her disable it. It still didn't work.
If by "softphone" you mean the on-screen keypad, then yes. The keypad showed up with the phone#. I could enter a number on-line. However, when connected to a phone there was no dial tone. When you entered the number and hit connect, it didn't go anywhere. Instead it gave proxy registry error. They tried using different USB ports, etc. They were working with Windows XP. I am not sure on the service pack, but I am pretty sure it's the latest one. In any case, I have the latest one and it didn't work for me either.

I'm guessing that you have two distinct issues: a firewall problem, and a problem with telephone interface audio.
For the former, if you have the Actiontec router on your FiOS, others have reported issues with certain configurations. One way to eliminate that possibility is to test at a site with another type of Internet connection, e.g. a friend's, a neighbor's, or at work. Or, you might try lower firewall settings in the router. I'm assuming that it does show 'ready to call' before you attempt the first call. When you make the first call from the softphone, do any intermediate messages appear in the status area, before the proxy error is shown. What happens on an incoming call?
For the phone problem, do you get a blue light on the MJ? If you plug in MJ to the USB while holding the shift key, this should bypass starting MJ, but the blue light should still come on. Now, if you pick up the phone, do you hear a tone? Also, if you connect a 'dumb' (one that does not plug into AC power) corded phone to MJ, do you hear tones when you press number buttons?

Stewart, could it also be that maybe their proxy is down? If that's the case, here's a list of all the other proxy servers: http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/prox ... oxy%20list
To change this though you'll have to set up a softphone (a SIP program that does not require the MJ) or use the caller ID spoofer. Since the spoofer is easier to set up, maybe try that route first: http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/outb ... ight=spoof

IMO if the softphone showed 'ready to call', then there was a 200 response to REGISTER, so it's very unlikely that it's a server side problem causing no response to INVITE. Also, there was an implication that this trouble persisted over a period of time, and I've not seen lots of similar complaints.
