My Magic Jack will not close down

Post by Anne Burns »

For some reason, my Magic Jack will not shut down properly. When I click on the x to close the MJ window it only minumizes it. When I go to the support website and try to access chat support I have trouble. The chat page opens with the message 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage'. What to do?

Magicjack Close

Post by tcrewson »

I have the same Close problem since automatic update ("Lucky you...") approx. 5/23/2012: The X-button just minimizes the window. (Running Windows XP)

No quit confirmation after 911 address applied

Post by kewlbreez »

Mine would hang sometimes, where I'd have to kill it. But sometimes it would close. But I always got the confirmation do I want to quit. Now since I updated 911 info, it just minimizes. No confirmation dialog. I have to kill it every time. I searched the Registry and didn't find any "minimize to tray" setting. I thought maybe that had the wrong info. Weird!!

Trouble is when the software is flaky forcing you to kill it, then it's inevitable the settings will get scrambled eventually.

I found a solution to my MJ problem. Actually, it was two separate issues.

First of all, I has to fix the reason why I couldn't open a chat window at the customer service website. I have a program called HOSTS file on my computer to wipe out ALL pop-ups and banner ads. I had to edit it so I could open a chat window.

You folks may not like what I have to say next as to our current problem of shutting down MJ. I just got finished talking to a worker bee tech and an upper level tech. According to what they told me there, they (the engineers) are in the middle of 'upgrading'(?) the program. Clicking on the x on the upper right corner of the MJ no longer shuts the window. It only minimizes it. If you want to shut it down at this time you need to unplug it.

CLOSE dial pad

Post by Ruejo »

You may also close the dial pad without unplugging the device.

Simply open task manager (pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL buttons on the keyboard all at the same time.) Then go to Processes tab and end all magicJack processes in there.

Thanks, but when I mentioned that I had to "kill it" that's what I was talking about. Killing it from task manager.

It seems now if I unplug first it offers the dialog to quit. Fine. But I hate it when changes just happen blind. But for $20 yearly phone service I guess you have to expect some cut corners. But I still don't understand why I have to download contacts. That's silly. Just put the contact file in a different folder than the magicjack program files(such as a folder in Documents.)

Nothing wrong with a "download contacts" feature. Say if you accidentally erased your local contacts file. But it shouldn't be hard wired. There should just be a command in the menu. After downloading it would rewrite the local contacts file. This is programming 101. Doesn't get much simpler.

I believe that once you deleted the Local Contacts file then mJ would rebuild it automatically by downloading contact list from mj server...

how about accepting all cookies and unchecking required servier authorization in the Internet Options -- :)

Also, double check your system time if it's correct or not.

I didn't delete any files. All I'm saying is the program should load the address book from a local file by default instead of waiting for minutes for a server response. The way it handles the address book is like somebody who never programmed until a few weeks ago. I've been programming PCs since 1986. I recognize bad design when I see it. :)

I don't mean to be a "bitch only" poster. I program myself so I know some things that seem simple to the outsider can have side effects that make it difficult to do correctly. But it frosts me when I see lousy design just due to lack of interest. I mean, programmers don't even get that much $$/hr these days? Can't they spend a grand and do it right? :)

Anyway, I'm glad to the have the thing. I can't afford to pay the big phone company anymore. And forget about mobile!! Oh well, I hardly use phone anyway. Mainly I need it to order Chinese food delivery. :)

Somebody I knew in the IT business used to say "lock 'em in a room and throw cheeseburgers in over the transom." Now they don't even get the salary. Just the burgers. :)

I hope it won't matter because the program will shut down now. :)
Seems to change every day. Yesterday when I unplugged from the USB the soft phone just disappeared by itself.

Oh well. Seems to be working a bit better, even if quirky.

You have to call their support and complain. The close button has been broken for so many months now. I think they did it on purpose because people not handy with computers were clicking it thinking it would just close the GUI but the phone would still work.

I've had to resort to using a .bat shortcut.
