Hi All
Has anyone had this problem...
I received my magicjack yesterday and all went well with the installation...i registered and got a phone number.
But the thing is it does'nt let me use the telephone option.I cannot change the option from headset/other to telephone
I dont get a dial tone but i can dial and i hear the dialled phone ringing on my PC instead of the phone.
In short i'm not able to use my cordless telephone.
I had a chat with live help and they were not able to help...finally they said MJ is sometimes incompatible with wireless internet connection.
I dont understand...can anybody please help.
regards
Siva

I am having the same problem too and Ive had my magic jack for a bout 2weeks now. In my case its been nothing but problems and i usually stick with things for a while but Im starting to think i'll have to return mine. I just went to buy another phone and it still wont ring on my phone. I have rebooted and restarted up top no avail. Im guessing this thing started like sometime last night.
I'm having the same issue... just received MJ today, registered, etc... I can dial out with the softphone but can't use my "real" telephone. The menu feature won't allow me to select that option.
------------edit---------------
I have unplugged, re-plugged, magic-fixed, etc... the only change is that I now have dialtone when I pick up my phone... it's just that dialing doesn't do anything. Still unable to select telephone in the options menu.

By any chance are all three of you using Vista?
When I was using it on Vista I would have to fool it, trick it or just plain mess with its mind to get it to come up in telephone mode.
Now her is what I did until I got tired of it and bought an XPe thin client.
I would make sure the cordless phone was off the hook and then restart magicjack a couple of times it that didn't work I would reboot, and as long as the cordless was off hook it would usually come up in telephone mode. (but on Vista I never could get it to autostart so I would have to double click the icon on the desktop).
My thought on this was that some of the Cordless (state of the art electronics) present such a high impedance to the MJ unit it doesn't see it as a phone connected and automatically assume it has to use the on-board mic & headset. When you leave the cordless off hook it presents a little lower impedance to the MJ and it then sees it as a connected phone.
If you guys are not a little savvy about electronic things (not derogatory) you all are going to think I just finished my second Six-Pack. But believe me it was the only way I could get it to work (keep in mind this only happened on Vista with XP the thing behaves as it should, which is lucky for it otherwise it would have had a mono-e-mono with my Ball pien hammer out in the garage.

Thanks for your reply... I'm running the MJ on an old XP SP2 box I had laying around...
I am using a cordless phone... unplugged it from the MJ, unplugged the MJ from the USP port, waited for 15 secs, re-plugged into the USB, then re-plugged my cordless phone. Works perfectly. In the menu options, "telephone" has now been automatically selected. Made a test call... works great.
Thanks again for you help.
Now... to begin playing around with some of those tweaks in the hacks forum...

asmithee1,
Do you have to go thru that procedure every time you turn on your computer not that it would be all that bad a thing to do, just a little annoying?
If you do have to do it each time you restart your machine, you might want to try the 100 K-Ohm resister trick they use for fixing "No Caller ID". It may just lower the MJ impedance enough that it will see it when you reboot and you may not have to go thru the procedure of plugging things in one at a time.
There is also a guy on here that sells them pre-maid for $5 bucks and they are really nice looking and very small, not something the average Joe like you and me could whip up easily at home.
Anyway very glad you found a work-around. Makes life a little more pleasant when you can play with your toys rather than fight them.

Not able to choose phone? This is what I did...
For some reason I am not able to skype while magicjack is selected, so, what I have to do is disable the handset (USB Internet Phone by TigerJet)
To do this, I right click on the Speaker Icon (On the Bottom Right Corner)
and choose recording devices, I then need to Right click the handset and choose disable. Once this is done, I am able to us skype with no issues.
So why am I posting this in here?
I have found that if I do not enable the handset, I have the same issue that all of you are having. What I do to get it back is this...
Right click on the speaker icon
Choose Recording devices
Right click anywhere in the field and choose "Show Disabled Devices"
Right click Handset (Which is now showing in the field)
Choose enable
Go to Menu on the MagicJack
Choose "Volume/Headset control"
Choose Telephone
Restart MagicJack (Not the Computer)
And everything is back to normal
Hope this helps you out!
