Just got MJ. What can do BEFORE init. setup for hackability?

Post by $magic »

I just got my MagicJack, and haven't set it up yet. I want to know if there are any posts on the initial setup to make my MJ more "versatile." In other words, is there anything I can do to open up functionality that otherwise wouldn't be available if I go through the standard setup?

Not really, MJ must be set up first (installs softphone, registers with MJ server to get a phone number). You can spoof caller-id later or run MJ softphone as a service later.

what else do you want to do with it?
It's not about to pick up Sat-Tv or even cable tv for that matter.
It's a VOIP provider.
It can't cook your Hot Pockets.
The best it can do is help you order a pizza from Papa John's.

As < $magic > mentioned, sometimes there are things that should be done before first connecting a VoIP device to the internet. i.e. with Broadvoice you want to take your new VoIP adapter and manually set it up unpassword protected. The same used to hold true for SunRocket's Gizmo. So I believe he wants to know if there is any reason to make an image of the device, run a program first or perform a hack first prior to initializing and setting up the unit. I would like to know as well. Please post anything here or provide a link!

I'm pretty sure the answer is "no". Look at all the tips and tricks on this forum and they're all post-installation. Just install as normal and follow the instructions for the tips and tricks you want to use.

MJ device, by design, is an USB audio device with RJ-11 interface and some built-in flash memory. Its firmware may have support for echo canceller & various audio codecs, but it does not do VOIP signaling on its own. It also does not have any built-in GUI to be accessed/controlled like typical VOIP/ATA devices. The MJ Softphone running on the PC/MAC does all the VOIP/SIP signaling and uses the MJ's RJ-11 interface for audio path.

MJ device, by itself, is not a typical VOIP device 8)
