What goes wrong? Is there an error message? If it hangs, what is on the screen, If it doesn't start at all, do the two drives appear? If so, does anything happen if you launch the autorun manually?

It Just Hangs and then closes. I do not see the logic by the inventor for not making it 2000 compatible?
That would mean more folks would buy the magicjack and that is the main purpose for coming up with any product what the hell was this guy thinking???

I agree...it should at least be compatible with win 2000...cant see how difficult that would be.

The same thing happen when I plug in my MJ...it just hangs and freezes on the start-up logo.

If anyone has figured a way around this or a fix...would be greatly appreciated.

If you can register the device on an XP or Vista PC, you might try copying the mjusbsp folder to the Win 2k machine, disabling autorun, and running the magicjack.exe directly via an appropriate shortcut.

How can I get the MagicJack to work on my Windows 2000 Pro?

Post by Kapustakid416 »

According to the doc's I saw MJ will only work with Windows XP or an upgrade of MJ to MS Vista. Anything earlier than XP is not going to work for whatever reason

its more complcated or easier than that...

Post by icefire »

When I run magick fix on my win 2000 comp, it says OS compatible with MJ. But when I plug the MJ into the comp, it hangs and stops during Splash screen, and I get error message, Magic Jack is not supported by your operating system.
So, in essence, it would be able to run, if the program would let it install. So, maybe one of you out there can help us stuck with Win 2000 comps, and figure this out for us?...I would sure appreciate an easy fix....

I don't have a Win2k machine to try this on; someone please test it.

I assume that your installation got far enough to create an mjusbsp folder with magicJack.exe in it. (If not, we can do this manually.)

In the mjusbsp folder, make a copy of magicJack.exe; call it magicJack-p.exe .

Open the copy in a hex editor, e.g. hxd, and patch four bytes as shown by this comparison:

Code: Select all

>fc /b magicjack.exe magicjack-p.exe
Comparing files magicJack.exe and MAGICJACK-P.EXE
00702999: 96 92
00702E41: EA CA
00702E42: BE FE
00702E44: 55 5B
To be sure that this is done correctly, the MD-5 of the original file (dated 12/21/2007) is 0DF25B45230F7F3C08DBBEEF8F778F0D and the patched file MD-5 is 0843BC4DFFEFA09C933415752C314EA7 .

Create a shortcut to the patched file. Edit the Target so it is something like:

Code: Select all

"C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\mjusbsp\magicJack-p.exe" /foreground /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "C:\magicJack"
Of course, it should indicate the actual path to the patched file.

Double-click the shortcut and with luck, MJ should start.

ummm, what?

Post by icefire »

First of all, when the MJ fails to load, it doesnt leave any folders at all. it just stops downloading and erases everything it tried to load. Secondly, I am not tech savvy enough to even know what a hex file is, sorry. And the rest was waaaay over my head. patched bytes? MD-5 ??? Thanks for trying....

I copied the mjusbsp folder from my winXP machine onto my win2000 machine (into the apropriate directory) and did the edits as shown.

This procedure worked perfectly for me. Magic Jack does indeed work on my win2000 machine.
Note: You have to start and stop the application manually.

Thanks Stewart!

W2k and magicJack

Post by JimBoy »

Minoe, tried everything in the fix. fc shows changes done correctly. The shortcut is "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\mjusbsp\magicJack-p.exe" /foreground /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "C:\magicJack" as described. Problem is when I double-click the shortcut, nothing happens. Turned off my firewall and SpySweeper.

Did you need to do anything else? (any other files copied XP other than mjusbsp and .magicJack folders)

Does the MJ need to be added after boot or before?

Thanks, Jim

This all looks correct (provided that you are actually running as Administrator). Do you have the latest service pack and all patches?

Download and run this test: http://tjnet.com/software/download/voip ... up1313.exe . If all components work (recognizes device, dialing, ringing, audio tests ok) then I don't know what may be wrong; you can change the shortcut

Code: Select all

"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\mjusbsp\magicJack-p.exe" /foreground /lf log.txt /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "C:\magicJack"
and maybe find a clue in the log.txt file, which should be created in the mjusbsp folder.

If the test fails, you probably are missing a USB driver; what fails should be a clue. If the test doesn't even show the serial number of the device, you may be missing something related to the USB hardware; does a USB flash drive work in that port?

magicJack on W2k

Post by JimBoy »

Stewart

Thanks for the SDK Demo link and the logfile option. MJ still won't run on w2k.

Re: Original problem ("nothing happens"). Corrected by putting space between /scf and _magicJack.

Now: Plug in MJ -> magicJack splash screen -> auto opens Firefox -> Freeze
Instead: Stop Firefox in its tracks. Run either magicJack shortcut (w or w/o log file). Now freezes or crashes
after phone screen. [See log.txt below]

Run Tiger Jet SDK Demo: Dial tone - Yes, Ring phone - yes, Audio Test - Total freeze.

USB Devices on MJ insertion:

Tiger Jet USB Composite Device (driver: usbhub.sys ver 5.00.2195.6689)
USB Composite Device: (driver: USBSTOR.SYS ver 5.00.2195.6655)

Is there a driver issue? Has anyone other than Minoe gotten this to work?

Thanks, JimBoy

Stewart, which version of magicjack.exe are you using for this?

I've tried version 1.73.4153.2910 as well as 1.73.4153.2903 and do not get the same HEX values at the offset's you have posted above. I was using Winhex HEX editor BTW.

Hi Stewart / CBR900RR

I had the same problem as CBR900RR - the HEX values did not match. It started with 96 at 00702999 but the remaining three vales were not the same. I went ahead and changed the 4 values anyway ...

it worked .. got MJ fired up .. system crashed twice during Audio Setup.

then after boot up (second time) - tried to place a call. Dial Tone = YES. But call does not materialize.

any suggestions ..

thanks

Stewart - 2k Pro MagicJack Patch using HxD

Post by Suthnautr »

Hello Stewart,

I've downloaded HxD and figured out how to do file comparison from the "Analysis" "File Comparison" "Compare" menu (loads both files for comparison) but am not sure where to put the patch:
00702999: 96 92
00702E41: EA CA
00702E42: BE FE
00702E44: 55 5B
My MagicJack hasn't arrived yet so I can't do the registration on an XP and copy the mjusbsp folder yet, but want to get the info I need now so I'll be ready to run with it when it gets here. Also, you wrote that the new MD5 is 0843BC4DFFEFA09C933415752C314EA7. Will this take place automatically once I insert the patch? (I believe the answer is yes, but not being a programmer have to ask - excuse my ignorance). Last, as I fully expect this to work as it did for the other 2kPro user you helped who had success, I'd like to say thanks, you're a life saver. XP is cool, but I still love Win 2K Pro.

Stewart - 2k Pro MagicJack Patch using HxD

Post by Suthnautr »

Oh, I see... the left hand column is the "offset" (line number) and the values you wrote in the left hand column have to be changed to the values in the right hand column. How efficiently notated. Very cool - I learned something. Question: if these values are not right for every version of the software, is there any chance we can get a version that this patch will work on from somewhere? Or (egads) hope that someone else with programming ability will have time to work on another patch that works for newer versions?

Post by Lounger »

Just installed version above on an 'xp home' machine with no problems.

Then using Stewart's directions, copied the mjusbsp file to a win 2k pro machine. Found the stipulated corresponding byte addresses to have different original values as other post above, changed anyway to recommended values, nothing different resulted- "alert popup window" states: will not work with NT 5.0. I am pretty sure I did everything to the letter- found hex addresses, overwrote with new values, saved as -p.exe., copy and pasted recommended target suffix. Still, machine notes presence of dongle in USB, but will not install or work at all. Although it was the first time I ever used a hex editor, I suspect the newer version negated the effort.

Nice try. Perhaps an update is in order? Can we keep up with them?
