I was almost ready to buy, but remembered my old magic jack was horrible for voice quality, probably because my dsl was slow.

With that kind of marginal upload, you are bound to have significant issues with ANY VOIP service. Might have a chance with older Skype version.
You can get a test account for free with voip.ms to tinker with.

I have a cheap DSL that generally downloads around 1.3-1.4 Mbps and uploads at 0.3-0.4 Mbps. In my experience, the MJ+ works fine with this. Of course, your results may vary.

The speeds you posted are 'enough'. However equally important is latency and of course reliability (few dropped packets). For a better idea, run a test of your Internet connection under Tools at www.8x8.com .

When we were on AT&T DSL we had 1536mbps down, 128mpbs up.
We had very few problems. One person could listen to internet radio while the other was on the phone, and maybe browse the web lightly.

Watching a youtube video would make both the video and the call suffer.

It can also depend on the reliability of your ISP.

If you don't like the magicJack after thirty days, something tells me you'll still have to pay for the return postage to magicJack.

With that kind of marginal upload, you are bound to have significant issues with ANY VOIP service.

My MagicJack only uses 80 - 90 Kbps downstream and 80 - 90 Kbps upstream while on a call. 0.5 Mbps upstream is more than five times what he needs. He should be fine assuming he's not doing much else. If he is, he might need to play with QoS settings on his router (if possible) to give higher priority to VOIP.
